I was away from home from 17th December until 4th January and the temperature was set at around 12 during the day and 10 at night. I have come back to find that Nest records high levels of usage on several days. How is this possible.

I hope someone answers your question! I have a similar issue, but Nest seems correct. I was not home for 10 days in December and set my thermostat to OFF. I left only two lamps with LED bulbs on. But the utility company says that I used more electricity and gas in December than I did in November! Yet the Nest app says that my usage was lower in December than November. I think that the utility company overcharges people in December because they assume that everyone uses more electricity and gas because of the winter temperatures in this region.

is all very suspicious - I will be writing to the Gas Company British Gas to see what they have down

Hello folks,
I'm sorry for the late reply and for the challenges you're facing with your Nest Thermostat and the discrepancies between the Nest app and your utility company's records.
Regarding the high usage recorded, there could be various reasons for this discrepancy. It's possible that the thermostat is detecting some activity or changes in the environment that contribute to increased usage, even if you set it to Off. Additionally, issues with the Nest Thermostat's temperature readings or other functionalities may be affecting its performance. As for your concerns about the utility bill, it's not uncommon for utility companies to estimate usage based on historical patterns, especially during peak seasons like winter. This estimation might not always accurately reflect your actual consumption, leading to potential discrepancies.
To address these issues, you may want to consider the following steps:
Let us know how it goes.

I do have issues with the Nest thermostat, as well. I can’t earn a Leaf unless I set the thermostat at 62 degrees (F) or lower! It is currently around 15 degrees (F) outside with a couple of inches of snow on the ground. To save money I went ahead and set ECO temperature to 62 degrees to earn a Leaf. It’s so cold in my house that my iPhone sends me messages that the phone is too cold and it will damage the battery! I have to wear warm clothes and stay under a blanket with a heating pad! My fingers, feet, and nose are very cold and uncomfortable. To make matters worse Nest says that my furnace is running as much as 9 hours a day! When I had it set on 66-67 degrees (F) last week some days I did earn a Leaf. Nest said that the furnace was running 45 minutes - no more than 3 hours a day? Temperatures were colder last week.
How does setting the thermostat to a lower temperature make the furnace run more hours per day but the house is very cold? Why does the Nest app now say that I can only earn a Leaf at 62 degrees (F) which is too cold?

Oh yes. Despite making the sacrifices of setting the thermostat at 66-67 degrees, and now at 62 degrees, plus practically living in the dark with only 1 light on in the entire house, my utility bill is steadily climbing! How is this Nest thermostat helping me?
