Can't stop heating at night

silver_badger

Hello,

We have a new Nest thermostat. Latest version I think.

I have scheduled the heating to be on from 0600 to 1900 each day.  However, the heating comes on at random times through the night and wakes me up.

Is there some setting I need to turn off to stop it from doing this?

Thanks,

Henry.

Hi Henry,

Same happened with me but I’m pleased to say that it only happened once or twice then from then on it was fine. I think it might have had something to do with the heat link being in the coldest part of the house (the hallway). I hope this helps.

Another idea is to look at your Nest's schedule.  You have one set point at 0600, for the daytime temperature you want, and then you have another at 1900, for your nighttime temperature target, right?  Possibly your 1900 set point temperature is too high, and the Nest turns on during the night to maintain it.  If you want the Nest to be "off" during the night, you can set a very low temperature at 1900.

Thanks very much for the reply. The schedule has a temperature of 18 deg at 0600 and just 9 deg at 1900 (I can't make it any lower than that). Sometime I go down in the night when I can hear it rumbling away and see that it's back on 18 deg again. I think it may be a "smart" feature of some sort. I know it has the capacity to adjust your schedule to what it thinks is best?

Otherwise I've no idea why it would alter the target temp in the middle of the night. Unless it's faulty perhaps.

Cheers,

Henry.

So the easy answer wasn't the right answer.  It's possible that the Nest is trying to do something "smart", as you say, by sensing that you're home and giving you a nice, comfortable temperature.  So you want to turn off presence sensing.

Presence sensing differs a lot between the models, so first figure out whether you have a Learning, an E, or a Nest not Learning not E.  Here:   https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9246551

Then read up on presence sensing, which may also be called Home/Away Assist depending on your model and interface, and turn it off to see if that helps.

So it didn't come on last night. I already ad the Auto shedular function turned off, it I also tried off the indoor outdoor recognition function, which I thin might have done it. Fingers crossed! Cheers!

Hey silver_badger,

I wanted to follow up and see if things were still working correctly for you here. Hopefully things are all set, but let me know if you've seen any problems.

Thanks,
Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the message. Yes, it has not come on at night for a few nights. I think it was the Home/Assist function that was causing it; does that sound plausible? Bit of a shame because it may be a useful function otherwise.

Thanks,

Henry.

Hey silver_badger,

I'm not sure if that could have been the cause, but I'm happy to see it's working. Have things stayed working reliably since you last updated?

Thanks,
Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, it's not come on at night since I made those latest changes. I think that was all I changed last time (the home assist function).

What do you think may have been causing the issue?

Henry.

I'm happy to hear that everything is fine now. Sometimes, some of the thermostat features can override your schedule, but as you mentioned you already had the Auto-schedule feature off. Have you also checked the True Radian option? You can find more details about it here: https://goo.gle/2TGQ8yz.

Also, indeed, the Home/Away settings need to be done accordingly, otherwise this can induce confusion to the thermostat.

Thanks for the advice. I'll take a look.

All the best.
