Changing Nest Wifi settings

AngieR

I recently added a router linksys system. I'm trying to turn off the Bell wifi but my Nest Thermostat is still connected and I haven't a clue how to disconnect it from the Bell wifi and connect it to my new one? I have the Nest Thermostat. It's already frustrating enough that I can't seem to connect it to my Nest app anymore and now this! Everything was so much easier prior to being forced to migrate!

I have googled this SEVERAL times, if I go to the settings icon in the google home up in my Thermostat I do not have an option for wifi. On the actual thermostat it is showing the old wifi setting and I'm not able to select another one from there either!

Thank you in advance for your help!

I believe you need to remove your device from your home and set it up again to change the wifi settings.  Which is very ridiculous and frustrating so I  hope I'm wrong.

But it's a similar experience when setting up a nest device and it asks you for your wifi password during setup. I first made the mistake of entering the password to the 5Ghz wifi band and it only supports 2.4Ghz.  So setup failed, but instead of asking for a different network and/or password, it just has the option to try again.  Which just retries to connect like before and keeps failing. Even starting the process all over and connecting my device to use the 2.4ghz wifi doesn't work because it skips the part where it asks for a wifi password, and uses the old one causing an infinite loop of device setup failure.

You need to totally forget the 5ghz network in your network settings so that the nest app can't connect and then it asks you for a new password.  Maybe you can try to forget the network your thermostat used to connect to and see if it asks for a new password.  Or setup your new wifi to be the exact same name and password as it previously was.   Nest should really fix these setup issues, creates such a bad experience.

On the thermostat go to settings, there should be a section called network, click it and spin the thermostat to the new wifi, (is the new wifi even working on other things?), Now you should be able to spin type the new password.

Under setting is also a reset option that will wipe your settings and ask you again to do all the things you did to get working with Bell.

Depending on nest version and your Linksys setup you may not be able to connect. Say your nest is old and can only see 2.4GH wifi and your Linksys is set to be 5GH only.

Alternatively, you can rename your new wifi to your old one and set the same password as you had with Bell and all things will connect to it without even knowing anything changed.

Thank you so much for your help! As it turns out the only Nest Thermostats that you can changewift/account settings on the actual thermostat is any of the thermostats other than the basic one which I have! Go figure.

I did have to remove my device from the Google Home App, then reinstall it. Luckily after my second attempt and glasses I realized there was an option during set up to say already installed so the Thermostat is connected to my new Velop's system and working.

I now cannot connect my last device, a google home (the older hub taller version) it recognizes it makes the sound my new network comes up but then it just spins and spins and spins and doesn't connect I've reset it, forgotten my new wifi network and reconnected, I even unplugged it for the night!

I also tried to turn off my bell wifi (was told the two routers would fight to connect?) but if I do that my TV Bell Fibe app doesn't work. I also don't understand the 2.4gh vrs 5 gh. Starting to wonder why I got these 3 nodes in the first place! Maybe once the basement is finished and I move the one down and my son has no issues with gaming it will make more sense. For now I have Bell Fiberoptics and this new Linksys Velop mesh system, guessing I've done the settings basic??

Hey folks,

Checking back in since this thread hasn't had activity in a while, If you're still having trouble connecting your devices to your network, please give these steps a try:

  • Make sure your Google Nest Hub is within 15 feet of your Wi-Fi router.
  • Reboot your Nest Hub and router.
  • Check router settings. (AP isolation must be disabled and UPnP must be enabled).
  • Turn on Local network access for the Google Home app. Here's how: Privacy > Local Network > Google Home app
  • Use a mobile hotspot to set up your devices (To isolate the issue).

Thanks,

Alex

Thank you everyone for your help. Entire system is up and running perfectly now! I had all 3 nodes connected upstairs and it was overkill. Once I unplugged the 3rd one everything starting working just fine. The 3rd one was always to be in the basement anyway so once completed down there that's where it will go. Most of my google products, including my Chromecast I just got going here at the new house had to be factory reset prior to google home even recognizing them to connect into my home.
