Dear all,
After receiving notification about the upcoming discontinuation of the Nest second generation support by Google Home, I contacted the Google support team to inform them of my dissatisfaction. I mentioned that there are many people in this forum who are also extremely unhappy about this decision. My device works perfectly well and I purchased it 10 years ago especially for its remote features. I informed the two people who I spoke with that this planned obsolescence goes against the environmentally friendly advertising that the company promotes for this device. We are being obliged to discard a fully functioning device and pushed to purchase a new one; whether there is a discount or not, this is unethical and environmentally UN-friendly.
I encourage all of you to call/write/chat with the Google support team and express your dissatisfaction en masse, as well as call upon them to revoke this decision.

I absolutely agree as I have 3 fully functional thermostats gen 2 in my home and the idea of having to replace them just because the developers can't write a code to upgrade the software is just ridiculous. If they don't revoke this decision to end the nest gen 2 thermostat then they are basically saying that we as consumers have no choice in the money we spent for the items we have. Plus the fact of throwing away fully functional devices only to force us that love our devices and google, to litter landfills with devices that for absolutely no good reason is the exact opposite of the environmentally friendly policy that I thought google was founded upon when they created these devices. I don't want or need google to give me a discount on new items, I just want the devices I own to continue to function as it has for over 10 years. I beg google to change this idea or your forcing me to choose and that's not right of a company I have and want to continue to support! Please Google i am begging 🙏🏼🙏🏼

I’m extremely unhappy with Google for its decision to strip away the remote/app control of our Nest thermostats. This functionality is exactly what sold me on this product when choosing which thermostat to purchase. This is a slap in the face to us as customers—customers who shelled out our hard-earned dollars because we felt that what the Nest offered us was worth it—especially the app-control functionality. Taking this away is an act of BAD FAITH. Exactly what would it cost Google to just go hands-off and leave us alone with our fully functioning thermostats? I could accept their wanting to discontinue support for the older models. But they don’t HAVE TO claw back the functionality for which we’ve already put cash in their coffers. We’ve got to start calling our local news stations to report Google’s scandalous antics. And take to X and ALL our social media to broadcast our displeasure far and wide! Let’s roll!

Your thoughts mimic mine. This is very odd that our perfectly working thermostats can’t be supported by Google. The resources are clearly there in Google to continue supporting this product.

So General Motors just announced that starting 1/1/26 it will no longer offer support for any vehicle older than a 2015 model. They are offering discounts on new 2026 models to offset your upgrade cost. Obviously this is fiction but mimics Googles practices of greed, unreliability, and trust. Why would you "upgrade" (at a substantial cost) when your equipment works as advertised when purchased new? I have 2 Older Nest thermostats and I will NOT be upgrading or rather purchasing 2 new Nests at a cost of $300. I will NOT be purchasing ANY Nest product now or anytime in the future. I got my moneys worth from my original Nest, but will not be subject to basically what comes down to blackmail ( buy a new thermostat or your old one wont work anymore). I will revert to manually setting my thermostat just like the ones that sell for $30. When I do upgrade, it will not be a Nest thermostat.

I agree! However it is now two days past the date they gave for ending the ability to use the app for my second generation nest, and it's still working. We ordered the new one and hope it works without a common wire

Same. Tried today and mine still allowed me to control it remotely. Not complaining but I do hope the remote features stays.

Try it again today, mine was working after the 10/25 date, but now it has stopped connecting to the app. Extremely frustrating!!

Ours did not work with our 25 year old boiler ecen with a connector. We were quoted $600 to have a c wire installed. Our 4 theremostats work fine on the app with any connector. We were able to nstall them ourselves.
Tuesday
Which thermostats work fine without any C wire or connector? We ended up paying the electrician to install the C wire because all the smart thermostats seem to need one and our new fourth generation nest was not working properly without it. Now it's working beautifully and we absolutely love the updated features.

I am beyond angry. It should be illegal to sell a product as one thing, and then years later, DISCONTINUE part of the service sold. They should honor the original sale.
Furthermore, offering a "discount" for a newer device to be able to continue the service is a disgustingly greedy way to scam people into giving them more money. Its abhorrent, and the people making these decisions should be ashamed of themselves.

Completely agree. Why would I spend additional money to upgrade to the newer model, knowing that in 5+ years, this newer model will be discontinued, and I need to purchase another new model?!?!?! And like another poster stated, this planned obsolescence goes against the environmentally friendly advertising that the company promotes for this device. We are being obliged to discard a fully functioning device and pushed to purchase a new one - It is ironic that these devices are sold as environmentally friendly and helps to reduce energy costs, but yet throwing away a good functioning unit is okay ???
Monday
The remote functionality is the ONLY reason we got nest. 4 thermostats in a second home to monitor the safety of the home and adjust on demand heat based on cold weather environment. This is so bad acting! All work fine.

Oh, and forgot to mention, we were actively in the process of looking into 8 new devices for another house until this announcement. NO WAY will we be going with nest and setting ourselves up for this again. Google has lost all loyalty here.
