Does Google Home Override Nest App?

col_ken

Recently I installed the Nest Learning Tstat (Gen 3), performed the Nest App setup and was using it daily.  I also downloaded and setup the Google Home App and connected it with the Nest.  Within the last week I've lost control of the Nest on the Nest App but can read and control the Nest on Google home.  Does Google Home override the Nest App?  Should I delete the Nest App and just use Google Home?  I have not been able to reconnect with the Nest app.

Hi col_ken,

Thanks for posting in the community! I'm sorry to hear that you aren't able to control your Nest Learning thermostat through the Nest app as the Google Home app does.

Regarding your questions, the setup app for the Nest Learning thermostat is through the Nest app. When you migrate your Nest account to the Google Home app, you'll have access to control the devices in both apps. This means that one app doesn't override the other to control the thermostat.

In this case, I'd suggest the following:

  • Verify the home structure: Ensure that your thermostat is assigned to the correct home structure in the Nest app. Refer to this article for instructions: Manage homes and products with the Nest app.
  • Try logging in to the Nest app by selecting the "Sign in with Google" option. And select the account that you're using in the Google Home app.
  • Update the Nest app: Check if there's a newer version of the Nest app available and update it if necessary.

Let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Jenniffer

None of this worked.  I feel like I am in a loop.  I believe I lost connectivity with the app when my iPhone did and updated.  I am going to reset the thermostat and go through the entire set up routine again.  Thanks.

Hi @col_ken,

Thanks for following up! I understand how inconvenient this situation can be, and I appreciate your efforts to resolve it.

Since you'll be performing a factory reset on the device, please disconnect the thermostat from the app. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings on the Nest Learning thermostat.
  2. Select Reset.
  3. Choose Account connection.

Make sure you're using the same Google account in both apps.

Please keep me updated and let me know if you need more assistance.

Best regards,

Jennifer

I assume I should delete the Nest from Google Home before reset?  I was also going to reload the Nest app.  Thx

Thanks for your reply!

To re-add your Nest Learning thermostat to the Nest app, you'll need to remove it from the app first. However, since you're unable to see the device in the Nest app, I'd appreciate your help trying to do this from the Google Home app.

Once removed, please follow these steps:

  • Disconnect the thermostat from the app: Go to Settings > Reset > Account Connection. If you don't see this option, proceed to the next step.
  • Perform a factory reset: This will remove all your personal settings. To do this, select “All settings.”
  • Reconnect the thermostat: After the factory reset, add your HVAC information by following the steps on the screen. I recommend connecting the thermostat to your Wi-Fi network first to ensure a stable connection before adding it to the Nest app.

For more detailed instructions, you can refer to this article: Add your Nest thermostat to the Nest app.

Let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Jenniffer
