Hi I am installing my nest and have an extra y2 wire. All of the current spots are filled. Can I tape the wire and tuck it in behind and still use the thermostat? Thank you

Hello @dcrser2

Thank you for reaching out to the community. I understand you need help with an extra Y2 wire on your thermostat "E". I'm happy to help!

To provide the most accurate guidance, I'll need some additional information:

  • Attach a picture of the old wiring configuration.
  • Attach a picture of the current E thermostat wiring configuration.
  • Do you have a conventional or heat pump system?
  • Do you have an auxiliary cooling or 2 stage cooling?

Please, keep me posted.

Nest regards,

Eitan

Thank you for the reply Eitan,

Unfortunately the forum is telling me that I do not have permission to upload images. Here is the list of wires that I have.

C, R, G, W1, Y1, Y2, W2/OB

the new device has slots for

C, R, G, W, Y, O

I believe that I have 2 stage heating/cooling as often the current thermostat will flash Heat 2 or Cool 2 when it is operating.

Yes it does have a heat pump

Hello @dcrser2

Thank you for the follow-up information.

I appreciate you sharing the photos. Based on the images, the Nest Learning Thermostat  (4th generation) appears to be compatible with your system. Since you have two auxiliary  sources to ensure your system performance's expected.  Can be dangerous to your HVAC system only leave a tape the wire and tuck.

Keep me posted.

Best regards,

Eitan
