Google Nest Won't Turn off Heat

I installed a Google Nest in August and it worked great through the remainder of summer.  As the weather cooled, we turned it off.  This morning was frosty so I turned it on and moved it to heat.  The heater came on but it would not shut off when the appropriate temp was hit.  I had it set at 66 and the temp was at 78 when I finally pulled the thermostat off to see if that would stop it.  It did, the heater shut off about two minutes later.  We have a heat pump with electric cooling and gas heat.  I have four wires connected - blue wire to Y, green wire to W, white wire to OB, and red wire to R (won't let me upload a pic).  What am I missing?

Hello AZRenee,

Thank you for sharing your detailed setup with the Nest Learning Thermostat and the challenges you're facing. It sounds like you've put a lot of thought into your heating system configuration. Achieving the desired temperature at 7:00 AM can be a challenge, especially in colder weather.

Here are a few suggestions that might help you improve the performance of your thermostat:

  • Early-On Feature.
    • While you've mentioned turning off Early-On, it can be beneficial in certain situations. Try enabling Early-On again and adjusting the pre-heat time. This feature allows your thermostat to start heating in advance to reach the set temperature by the scheduled time.
  • Heat pump balance.
    • With Heat Pump Balance set to Max Comfort, the thermostat prioritizes comfort over energy savings. However, you might want to experiment with different settings to find the right balance. You could try setting it to a lower comfort level to encourage earlier activation of auxiliary heat.
  • Fan Settings.
    • Ensure that the fan is set to "Auto" rather than "On." Running the fan continuously may distribute heat more evenly but can also delay reaching the desired temperature.

Remember to monitor the changes you make and observe how they affect the system's performance. I hope these suggestions help you achieve the desired heating schedule. If you have any more details or updates, feel free to share them for further assistance.

Regards,
Mark
