Google Nest thermostat goes offline periodically

My Google learning thermostat Generation 2 periodically goes offline (mostly overnight) . I need to reset the network on the thermostat to get it back online in the morning. This only recently started happening after I installed 2 Ring video doorbells a few weeks ago. My router is only about 15 feet away from my thermostat, and I have a number of devices connected wirelessly to the router (Nest thermostat, 2 Ring video doorbells, Roku device, 2 cell Phones). I want to figure out why it is disconnecting and how to fix the problem. None of the other devices are having problems connecting.

Hello Devbat,

I'm sorry to hear about the connectivity issues with your Nest Learning Thermostat. It seems like the installation of the two Ring video doorbells might be a factor in the recent problems you're experiencing. Let's sort this out.

Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to address the issue:

  1. Check if there are any other electronic devices or appliances near the thermostat that could potentially interfere with the Wi-Fi signal. Electronic interference can sometimes disrupt connectivity.
  2. Although your router is close to the thermostat, check the signal strength in that specific area. Walls and other obstacles can affect signal quality. Consider relocating the thermostat temporarily to see if the issue persists.
  3. Verify that your router settings are compatible with the thermostat. Ensure that the router is not blocking the thermostat's connection and that it supports the necessary Wi-Fi standards.
  4. Some devices might operate on the same frequency as your thermostat, causing interference. Check if there's a frequency conflict, and consider changing the Wi-Fi channel on your router to reduce interference.
  5. Since the problem started after installing the Ring video doorbells, check if there are any settings on the doorbells that might be conflicting with the thermostat. It's possible that the doorbells are saturating the network, or try disconnecting one of them to see if there will be a difference.

Let us know how it goes.

Best regards,
Mark

I think the app itself is disconnecting from the thermostat. I've been closing the open apps on my phone before going to sleep for the night ((I would lose connection in the morning when I started using my phone again). So far the app has been working since I posted this.  I'm not going to be able to move the thermostat since it's where my previous old thermostat was and it has the C wire which means it's hard wired. I'd have to hire an electrician to do that. Hopefully this means that all is fine with me closing all the apps at night. Also, my router is in line of sight with the Nest thermostat,  there's no walls between the two of them. I'll try your other suggestions if I  have trouble again. Thank you for your assistance.

I do have a question,  has telephone live help been discontinued recently? I was able to call customer support when I first installed the Nest  thermostat.

Hi Devbat,

Sorry for the late reply. I'm glad to hear that closing the apps on your phone seems to have resolved the disconnection issue with the thermostat. It's great that the app has been working consistently since then. As for moving the thermostat, I understand that it might not be a feasible option due to the hardwiring and the need for an electrician. The fact that your router is in direct line of sight with the Nest Thermostat and there are no obstacles between them is also beneficial for a stable connection.

If you need real-time support, we integrate it into our Google Nest Help Center page with the Contact Us form so you can get in touch with our team. If you encounter any further issues or have additional questions, feel free to reach out. I'm here to help!

Warm regards,
Mark
