Heat Pump Balance

Hello it looks like this topic has been discussed before but I couldn't find an adequate answer.

I have a heat pump attached to a forced air furnace that uses natural gas.  The furnace has two stage heating capable, stage one is normal gas and fan speed, stage 2 is more gas for a bigger flame and a higher fan speed to heat up the house faster. If the tstat is raised more than 3 degrees at one time it will kick into the second stage to heat up the house within a reasonable time, once the temp gets within a half degree of the set point the furnace drops back to stage one with normal gas/flame and normal fan speed.  I have stage one, white wire, on W1 and stage two, brown wire, on W2/AUX.

My heat pump is connected to the O/B terminal and orange wire.  See the attached picture.

It seems with this setup the nest will not show "Heat Pump Balance" as a Nest Sense option.  I'm not sure I understand why not?  The heat pump should work until it becomes inefficient then the nest would call up the gas stage1  (W1) heat and if extra heat was needed then gas stage2 (W2) should kick in.  This seems straight forward but nest will not display the Heat Pump Balance (HPB) option.  Ok so it looks llke I need to sacrifice the stage 2 (W2) heat option in order for Nest to allow me to use the HPB option. So I disconnected the brown wire at the Nest Tstat and then plugged the Nest Display plate back on the tstat and went to the Nest Sense option screen but HPB was still not showing up.??? Do I have to wait some amount of time for Nest to readjust to the missing brown (W2/AUX) wire or do I have to reset the whole tstat and start over with the new missing brown wire?  Any ideas?

Hi wpenno,

Nest Thermostats have a Heat Pump Balance feature that optimizes the use of a heat pump in a dual-fuel system, where both a heat pump and a fossil fuel furnace are present. However, this feature may not be displayed in your case due to the gas furnace's presence and assumption of a single fuel system. This could be why disconnecting the W2 wire (stage 2 heat) didn't trigger the Heat Pump Balance option to appear, as the heat pump is connected to the O/B terminal.

Could you send us a photo of your previous thermostat wiring configuration and a photo of how you connected the thermostat wires to your Nest Learning Thermostat base? Also, what is the make and model of your heat pump system?

I'll look forward to your response.

Best,

Zoe
