I have a ac/heat pump with an electric furnace. I’m having trouble with the heat pump short cycling. I’ve tried several different methods to wire it and I just can get the heat pump to work correctly. It will work with the old thermostat but not this

On old tstat it says 2 stage heat, heat pump, aux heat, and cool.

Do you use all those heat functions or has the system been replaced and you only used some of those heat options?

They had black and white going to W2.

And they had Y and W1 jumpered together. That is Cooling Y and Heating W1 connected together which is very odd.

Strange wiring not sure what equipment you have.

Do you have any pics of the tstat wiring at the equipment?

At the equipment it is wire nuts 😳 the only heat is from the heat pump and an electric furnace. It should be straight forward but man it’s got me stumped. The heat pump runs fine in test mode and the furnace runs in ault 2 mode but it tries to run in ault 1 and it short cycles. I set it to run in ault heat only and seems to run the furnace but man I’d like the heat pump to run because that will get $$

First stage heat is the same as  first stage cool?only dictated by the o wire being energized maybe that why y1 and w1 were jumped ?

What brand system is this?

Is the heat pump and electric furnace all the same brand equipment?

Post some pics of the wiring at the equipment showing the terminal labels etc.

Normally you only have heat pump heat and then if you want the electric heat you ask for Aux/Emergency heat to turn on electric furnace as a last resort.

Maybe the electric heat is coming on at the same time as your heat pump and it gets warm inside the house shuts off the heat pump?

Hi folks,

I appreciate your help, @Houptee.

@Cadulaney3, thanks for letting us know that moving the power wire from Rc to the Rh terminal worked with your heat pump. If there’s anything else I can help you with, please let me know.

Thanks,

Mark
