Heat pump wiring?

I had a Honeywell basic thermostat wired up to my heat pump/AC. Works for AC. Now it doesn’t seem to be running the fan or heating since I wired up my Nest.

Hello GForce23,

Thanks for reaching out. It seems like there might be an issue with the wiring configuration for your Nest thermostat, specifically with the black wire. The black wire is not a standard color for thermostat wiring, so it's crucial to identify its purpose in your HVAC system.

The black wire from the Honeywell thermostat does not have a direct equivalent in the Nest Thermostat setup. However, it's possible that the black wire from your Honeywell thermostat served a specific function in your HVAC system that needs to be addressed. Share with us a picture of your old thermostat and the Nest Thermostat's wiring setup. Here's how to insert an image in a post:

  1. Reply to this post.
  2. Click Insert Image.
  3. Choose an image source location.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

I'll look forward to your response.

Regards,
Mark

The Black wire (Emergency Heat for a heat pump) which was the E wire is currently not wired… Should it be?

I do need see an "Insert Image" place to click.

It says I do not have permission to upload images.

I will come up to the thermostat and notice the heat is being called for but the fan is not running and the Emergency Heat indicator is on.  I think the black wire needs to be connected somewhere.

Hey GForce23,

Thanks for posting the photos. It looks like your black wire is your emergency heat. The star connector in the Nest Learning Thermostat can handle the wire for emergency heat. Please insert your black wire to the star connector and see if the issue persists.

Kind regards,

Jenelyn

Thank you so much for the response.  I had been asking where that black wire (previously wired up to the E connection needed to go) so I have done as you requested.  I will advise if this fixes the problem.  My understanding of the emergency heat function is that if after some time, the heat setpoint has not been reached, it enables the emergency heat.  My issue seems to have been that.  Also that the fan did not always seem to be running when the thermostat was calling for heat. But again I will advise and thank you so much for your reply.

No luck. I thought it was working but on a colder night, I got a notification saying that although the temperature was set at 70 degrees, the Heat Pump was unable to keep up and the temperture was at 63.  SO I have replaced it with the original Honeywell analog termostat and it works fine again.  I dont know if this wont work with a heat pump or something else.  I will attempt to return it tonight!
