I just install a heat pump and have gas furnace as well
What is the correct setting on the nest?
Should I be setting it as Duel fuel system which has a setting for "dual fuel use alternative heat when the out door temperature is below -1." (Alt heat is set as gas)
or
Should I setup it as Single fuel system which has W2 as Aux heat (but it is show as electric not gas and I have no way to change that) But the nest will have additional options such as use the heat pump compressor when outdoor temperature is above -1. There is also the Nest Sense Heat pump balance options as well.
suggestion?

Hi Kan2,
Thanks for checking it with us. A few questions: what type of Nest Thermostat do you have? In what states are you located? Could you please provide the make and model of your heat pump system? Sharing the photo of the wires connected to your system control board, would also be a great help.
Best,
Jenelyn

Hey everyone,
@Kan2, thanks for the follow-up information. You have a dual-fuel system (heat pump and furnace). Since you have a dual-fuel system, you will need a trained professional to complete the set-up of your thermostat. It’s important for a professional to assess the requirements for your specific dual-fuel configuration since choosing incorrect options for a dual-fuel system can result in damage to your system. Contact a local HVAC professional.
Let me know if you have any questions.
I appreciate the help, Jenelyn.
Regards,
Lance

I am not trying to be rude. I did contact my local HVAC professional. They are the one that installed the head pump. They told me to ditch and not to use Nest and gave me an ecobee3 lite for free. (can't attach photo since I do not have permission to upload). I am asking the question here because I am the only one that is saying "I prefer to use nest". I have no problem setting up the duel fuels setting (and that is what I am using right now). However, I read people are setting it up as Single fuel system which has W2 as Aux heat (but it is show as electric not gas and I have no way to change that) Setting it up this way, nest will have additional options such as use the heat pump compressor when outdoor temperature is above -1. There is also the Nest Sense Heat pump balance options as well. (duel does not have these type of feature / setting)

Hello Kan2,
Thanks for being a loyal Nest customer. For dual fuel systems, you won’t be able to use Heat Pump Balance. However, you can set a lockout temperature manually in the Nest thermostat’s Equipment menu.
Best regards,
Lance
