Heating come on unexpectedly

  • We have recently had a nest thermostat installed and concerned that the heating is coming on unexpectedly outwith the schedule that has been set. I am hoping I have done this correctly as we have been previously use to a hive system. Autoschedule turned off. Not sure if I can insert a screen shot of the app settings in here. We currently have it set for 19⁰c for a few hours in the morning and again in evening. Should we be setting a low temperature after each of these?

I have a similar issue with cooling switching on randomly. The thermostat seemingly does whatever it wants.

Hi @Kwright1310,

Thank you for reaching out! To help prevent unexpected temperature drops with your new Nest thermostat, here is some helpful information. Please feel free to share a screenshot of your app settings if you would like me to review them and offer recommendations.

Unexpected temperature drops can be caused by:

  • Power: May need a C wire or Nest Power Connector.
  • System: Could require professional HVAC maintenance.
  • Heat Pump: Issue with the changeover valve.
  • Thermostat Settings: Incorrect temperature settings.
  • Home/Away Assist: Inconsistent activity might prevent learning.
  • Eco Settings: Check the Eco target temperature.
  • Schedule: Accidental schedules.

Reviewing these can help keep your thermostat running smoothly. Here are some key settings to check:

  • Target Temperature: Ensure it hasn't been changed unintentionally.
  • Home/Away Assist: See if it's automatically adjusting based on presence. You can disable this in the Nest app (Settings > Home/Away Assist > Home/Away > Thermostat > Automatic Switching OFF) or Google Home app (Automations > Home or Away > Thermostat action > Remove action > Save). For more info on Eco and presence sensing, see the troubleshooting articles in the respective apps.
  • Auto-Schedule: This learns from manual changes. You can turn it off on the thermostat (Settings > Nest Sense > Auto-Schedule > Off) or in the Nest app for older thermostats (Settings > Auto-Schedule > Off). You can also clear your schedule in the Nest app (Settings > Reset > Schedule). For the 4th gen Nest Learning Thermostat, check Smart Schedule in the Google Home app (Thermostat name > Temperature preferences > Nest Sense > Smart Schedule).

This information should help you avoid potential issues. Let me know if you have any more questions!

Best regards,

Debora
