Home/away assist

I had too many issues with the main NEST app with regards to home/away assist. Frequently, the away routine would not trigger and heating would be left on.

I have now migrated from the nest app to the Google Home app and am hoping for better consistency with regards to heating turning on/off depending on location.

I have set this up on my mother and fathers mobiles and ensured location permission on Google home is always active.

Does the Google home app always have to be opened and running in the background on the mobile in order to trigger the routines?

Hi Mun96,

Uh-oh! No, the Google Home app does not need to be constantly opened and running in the background on your mobile device for the location-based routines to work. Once you have set up the routines and enabled location permission for the Google Home app, the app will use location services in the background to determine your or your family members' presence and trigger the routines accordingly.

The Google Home app utilizes the background location capabilities of your mobile device's operating system to detect when you or your family members are away from or returning to your home. This means that as long as the location services are enabled for the Google Home app and the necessary permissions have been granted, the app will work in the background to detect your location changes and trigger the configured routines. However, it's worth noting that the exact behavior and performance of location-based routines can vary depending on the specific device and operating system version. To ensure the best results, make sure that the Google Home app has the necessary location permissions and that your device's settings allow background location access for the app.

If you encounter any issues with the location-based routines not triggering consistently, you may want to double-check the permissions, update the Google Home app to the latest version, and make sure your device's operating system is also up to date. Additionally, you can try restarting your device or checking if there are any specific power-saving settings that may be affecting the app's background activity.

Let us know if that helps.

Best,

Zoe
