Home or Away & Pixel 9

I recently upgraded to a Pixel 9 and successfully transferred everything from my old Pixel 6. However, while my Nest thermostat recognises when I'm away and switches to Eco mode, it takes a very long time to detect when I've returned home, unless I manually update it via the Home app.

Any suggestions?

Hi bplp49,

Thanks for posting in the community! I apologize to hear that your Nest thermostat is taking a long time to detect when you've returned home. I'd be happy to help!

As you mentioned that the inconvenience is resolved for a while when you manually update the Home app, I'd like to better investigate the situation by asking the following questions:

  • What model of Nest thermostat do you have?
  • Is there another home member using your phone location?
  • Are there other Nest devices contributing to Home and Away?
  • Did another home member change the settings?

In the meantime, I’d suggest the following steps:

  • Make sure your Nest thermostat is showing online through the Google Home app.
  • Check which devices are set to contribute to Home and Away. For reference, you can check out this article: Change Home & Away Routines settings.
  • Check to see if the app recorded any activity in history view. Any recorded activity should provide an explanation of when and why the home state changed over the previous 10 days. For instructions, you can see this article: Home app activity.
  • If a family member has been at home for an extended period, Home and Away might ignore a phone that hasn't left home or reported any location changes. To fix this, toggle the phone location off in the Home or Nest app, wait 60 seconds, then toggle it back on. Wait another 60 seconds before returning to the app's main screen.
  • Restart your mobile device and reinstall the Google Home app cache.

Let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Jenniffer
