Hysteresis/Swing Band

Greygeek
Community Member

I am trying to "continue" a previously posted and very important issue thread from September 2021 that was pre-maturely "locked".

I have to agree with the issue in this post and thread that was prematurely locked on Sept 15, 2021.   The NEST Thermostat has made our home un-comfortable because it doesn't kick the heat on soon enough.   Our forced-air furnace needs to cycle more often in order to keep the temperature relatively even.  The NEST controls the temperature in a large sine wave --- it goes on, raises the temperature, then goes off and stays off until the actual temperature (measured by a thermometer external to the NEST T-stat) gets to 2-3 degrees below the set point before it turns the heat back on.   This causes us to keep cranking up the set point, which throws off the learning function.  (we primarily depend on the schedule we've programmed into the device).

Anyway, the OP of the first thread with this title is right.  What's the point of being able to claim that you might be  saving some natural gas when you've made the house uncomfortable in the process?

TO:  The forum moderator - DS Garrett
Please don't "lock" a discussion only a few days after it starts.  Leave problem statement threads open and let people add "I'm having this problem too" over a period of months and months, so that comments about a problem that never gets address can accumulate responses and inputs which might actually get some attention from Google/NEST.

Hey all,

Sorry for the late reply. I wanted to follow up and ensure you are good to go. Please let me know if you are still having any trouble from here, as I would be happy to take a closer look and assist you further.

Best regards,
Jake

Nope. The thermostat still has too wide of a swing on both turning on and turning off for both heating and cooling.

The next Google/Nest update should change the default Hysteresis to 0.5F and make it USER ADJUSTABLE.

Need to be able to adjust the swing band. When is this update coming out?

I have been asking this question for over a year and never got an appropriate response from them.

It looks like Google intends to do NOTHING about this product software deficiency.

Almost ONE YEAR later and nothing from Google/Nest. They obviously do not care to improve their product with this simple SW upgrade. They recently posted as much by stating they will close this unresolved issue!

Hey folks,

I suggest that you send feedback by following this link. Let me know if you have other questions or concerns, otherwise I’ll be locking this thread after 24 hours.

Best,

Hm, many of us do not use 'google home', have no intention to, and are happy with just the Nest app. The 'swing band' or hysteresis does not have much to do with either Nest or Google Home app. It is strictly updated firmware for the thermostat.

I currently have a pair of Lux TX9000 programmable digital thermostats that are 30 years old.

They have user adjustable "temperature swing". I found I had to adjust it to its smallest setting in order to be comfortable. (The setting is from 1 to nine, 3 is default and it's supposed to represent a 1° swing).

Does Nest not have such a setting? Why not?

I haven't installed my Nests yet, they are on order, but now I'm worried.

No. The Nest "Learning Thermostat" does NOT have a user-programmable swing (ie, hysteresis) setting. It claims to be fixed at 1 degree F but it is more like 1 degree C if reality. Very annoying. In the winter me and my wife go from freezing to cooking. In summer it is just as uncomfortable going from sweating to freezing. In between the extremes it is quite comfortable LOL.

google nest suck. Don’t buy it. I’m really disappointed with this 1F fixed hysteresis or swing. I regret not returning this thermostats in time. I hope they upgrade the software to have this option

And all they would have to do to fix it is a software update to at least fix it to 0.5 def F and, to  make it really awesome, fully user selectable! Yet they refuse to address it.

Truly sad to hear that the hysteresis is not adjustable - but in my case I want WIDER swings, as I do not want the furnace to come on every hour. My current thermostats allow for running twice a day, morning and evening, and for a bit longer period. I WANT the temperature to drop significantly before furnace kicks on again. Truly only way to save energy is to have the furnace run the least amount of hours. I've managed to 'perfect' this over a 15+ year period and is now down on less than half the hours run during a heating season (same furnace, house extended, no insulation added).

But fully agree that this should be adjustable. Just as a timer should be adjustable, as you do not want your AC compressor to kick on every 5 minutes. There should be a lock out timer of at least 30 minutes, the longer the better.

NEST NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS BASIC FEATURE REQUEST!

Can/should probably add to the post from 09/24/2022:

While I'm fully convinced that an adjustable hysteresis is needed, I will also say that so far the Nest has worked pretty well (now about 30 days in which is way too early for the season) and there hasn't been any of the feared short cycling in my case.

Some weird quirks as I am using the Nest app and was 'invited' to use Nest Review. Sort of crazy, as we have no time shift in energy cost here. Natural gas has the same price throughout the year. But in 'accepting' Nest Review, I was clearly kicked out of my Nest account and the system assumed I used Google Home (which I am not). Etc. Nest/Google should know that no (?) companies charge differently for the use of natural gas during the day, and hence as you know it is a gas furnace, should not bother us with additional settings that are really of no use.

Also wish it'd be easier to see both the set temperature and the actual temperature on the thermostat, and that the display changes could be done from the Nest app and not only the thermostat.

Also, wish the thermostat provided an easy summary over RUN HOURS!
Why? "hour run' is for most of us the easy measure of energy used (single stage furnace will consume X energy regardless of temperature) and I track it monthly. Did put an hour meter on the furnace, but Nest could easily send out a weekly summary over hour run (heat or cold, etc). Even graph it out per day. Yes, I know some is displayed in the Nest App, but it is very rudimentary and does not provide any summary. Just run hours per day.

But overall, been working well. Will however not result in ANY savings this year...

Don't lock the thread. Lots of people have this problem and it's user to user comments that solve problems. The actual support replies add absolutely nothing.    Prioritising support dept stats on issues closed is also causing you to waste time making duplicate responses when you could be using that time to find actual solutions.

Whether or not issues are closed comes from the perspective of the person who raised it, not your management who are incentivised to close them regardless of the outcome.

I agree. I even tried the suggestion above to no avail: "Check out this link on how to file feedback."

It's like sending feedback into a black hole. And, again, all they would have to do to fix it is a software update to at least fix it to 0.5 deg F and, to  make it really awesome, fully user selectable! Yet they refuse to address it.

Hello there,

I'm sorry for the late response. I know it has been a while, but I wanted to ensure that everything was covered here.

We value our customers' input. I'll bet other users would love to have this function too. We're really working to bring more features to Google Nest devices to make them work flawlessly. So, please let our product team know about it thru feedback, as this thread will be locked within 24 hours.
