I really hate eco mode.

We buy smart thermostats to give ourselves more control of our home heating/cooling. Not to be controlled by it and by google.

I live where the winters are regularly -50c. I routinely disable all eco/smart learning features. I have radiant heat and the constant adjustments google technicians in California think I need is INSANELY inefficient and frustrating to the point of rage.

Hi @Dan_A .  Thanks for getting back.  TBH. I don’t think anything will fix this.  I was having a conversation with someone who told me that this happens on the newer Google infrastructure, but not the older Nest infrastructure.  Not sure if that’s correct or not but my other thermostat was bought in the Nest days and this one in the Google days.  A new thermostat hasn’t fixed it.  My other one goes into Eco nicely without intervention, but the new one needs manually switching back from away to home and then back into away to trigger Eco.

Unfortunately, I’ve just accepted that this is the way it is and I’ve stopped all troubleshooting as I really don’t think it will make a difference.

Thanks anyway.

I have 2 nest thermostats in different locations.  One that I purchased when it was still Nest goes in to Eco mode when there’s no activity in the house (correct operation), the other won’t - the difference is that the 2nd one was bought and installed post-Nest (ie after the buy out).  Someone has said that they’re probably on old and new infrastructure, hence the differences, but it’s annoying.  Even Google have replaced the thermostat saying that it was faulty.  Same happened.  I have up and do it all manually now.

Hi folks,

Thanks for reaching out, and I'm sorry to hear that Eco mode is causing trouble here. I'd be happy to take a look into this for both of you.

@Selcer, I appreciate that you tried to find a fix. Resetting all schedules would help, under reset settings. This is to clear all of the learning temperatures that have been created over the last few months. Also, did you sign up for the Rush Hour Program feature from your utility company?

@MattAnorak, I understand they can be confusing. To clarify, what type of Nest thermostat do you have and which one is showing the issues? Here's your reference to tell.

I'm looking forward to your responses.

Best regards,

Mark

Hi @Markjosephp .  Both thermostats are v3 Learning thermostats and both have all the learning turned off.

Hi MattAnorak,

Thanks for getting back and letting me know.

To clarify, are you still experiencing the same issue of not holding the temperature? If so, try disabling the Home/Away Assist from your thermostats and, if you have the Google Home app, clear all the routines.

Let us know how it goes.

Best regards,

Mark

Hi, @Markjosephp  - the temperatures are holding fine.  What’s not happening is that the thermostat isn’t going into eco mode as it should when it goes into away mode.

Hi MattAnorak,

Thanks for clarifying. Let's sort this out.

  1. Make sure location services are turned on for any contributing mobile devices.
  2. Check if there are multiple devices signed into the same account.
  3. Are you talking to on the phone when you got home? If you were, this may be expected behavior because many phone carriers won’t allow for phone calls and data transfer at the same time.

Can you try the steps in this guide? Let us know how it goes.

Best regards,

Mark

Hi folks,

Just one quick final check in here since activity has slowed down. We'll be locking the thread in the next 24 hours, but if you still need help, I would be happy to keep it open. If there's more we can do, just let me know.

Thanks,
Mel

Hi, sorry - I missed this.

OK, so none of the checks are relevant as I don’t use location services for Nest on any of my phones and I’ve got it turned off for Nest.

What’s happening is this - if I go out for extended periods of time:

Thermostat 1, location 1: Will go into away mode and straight into Eco mode.

Thermostat 2, location 2: Will go into away mode, but very rarely (if at all) into Eco mode.

According to instructions, thermostat 1 is displaying expected behaviour, which is good.  Thermostat 2 is not.

Settings for the 2 thermostats at 2 different locations are identical.

Hi MattAnorak,

We're sorry for the late response. Chiming in to see if you are still in need of help with your V3 Nest Thermostat not going into eco mode when it goes into away mode? Have you been able to reboot your Thermostat 2?

Keep us posted.

Best,

Dan
