Yesterday the thermostat just randomly started cooling the house, even though the outside temp was in the 40's and rainy. The inside temp was 64 degrees, and my temp range was set to 69-72. The ambient temp was reading as 77 degrees, but was verified to be 64 with a handheld ambient thermometer. Surface temp of the nest itself was 76.3. Nothing has changed with any of the wifi, hardware, etc for the past 6 months. Using Nest Wifi mesh system. Has been installed since 12/2014. Is there any way to check the sensor and chips to see why this has failed? I have tried full restart/reset and have had the wifi disconnected but It still showed as 77 degrees this morning. I had the heat set to 78 degrees but it reached 72 actual and cut off. Pretty disappointing longevity for a device that just sits on the wall.

in case anyone comes across this, I figured out that the a/c was running for 3+ days. apparently both the furnace and the a/c were running and this caused the actual thermostat to get warm. I unplugged the Y wire and the a/c finally shut off and the nest temp reading started to finally drop. hopefully someone can tell me why it decided to crap out

to clarify, the nest was causing the a/c and furnace to run at the same time. nothing with wiring or equipment had recently changed. faulty back plate?

Hi ssokc,
Thanks for reaching out and we're sorry to hear about what's happening.
We could further check it by getting a photo of your current wiring configuration. If you're using a heat pump, we could check the wiring and set the right heat type and source by going to settings > equipment then select the right equipment type.
Let us know how it goes by replying to this thread.
Best regards,
Ryan

I will gladly take a photo when I get a chance, but it's important to note, nothing had recently changed. Using a gas furnace for heat, and a forced air A/C for cooling. Yellow wire in Y1, Green in G, Red wire in Rh, Blue wire in C, and white wire in W1.
I have since installed a new nest learning thermostat v3 using the same wiring and it is working fine.

Hi ssokc,
Thanks for your reply and we're sorry for the delay.
We'll be glad to get a photo from you about your HVAC wiring. That way, we can further check on what's going on with your system.
Also, have you checked the equipment settings already?
Let us know by replying to this thread.
Best regards,
Ryan
