Maintaining temperature

Tiffany52

my nest was working just fine with a cooling schedule and the home/away assist. I went on vacation and now it refuses to regulate temperature. It’s currently 81F in my house but set to 70. It says “70F in 2+hours” but it should never have gotten up to 80 in the first place because it’s been set to 70F all day.

I’ve turned the home/away assist off, I’ve cleared all the daily schedules I have but no luck. Any help??

Having the same exact issue after going on vacation.   I have mine set for 73, but it now shows indoor temperatures above 84 degrees, even at night when the outdoor temperatures were down to 71.  All night long it didn’t get below 84 in the house.  I’ve turned my home/away assist off too.

I hope I'm not wasting your time with this speculation, but there's a tiny chance that you've been affected by the Safety Temperature bug.  This bug surfaced last winter for some people who heat with a Nest.

Go into Settings and see whether your cooling Safety Temperature is on or off.  (According to the documentation, https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9249790?hl=en, the cooling Safety Temperature is off by default.)  If it's off, ignore the rest of this reply, and I'm sorry I don't have anything helpful to say, other than you might try a Reset.

If cooling Safety Temperature is turned on, then your Nest may think it's supposed to cool the house only down to that temperature.  The way to unclench the bug's grip on your Nest is to slide the Safety Temperature way down (below the current room temperature) or way up (don't know why this would work).  Then, if it's like the bug we had last winter, the Nest will come to its senses and obey you.

Any update?  Did yours fix itself?  I’m still on vacation and my nest is still reading above 80 degrees even though the AC is running.  Even when I turned it off at night, and the outdoor temps were in the 60s, it never dropped.  Hoping it’s the thermostat, and that it didn’t break my hvac.

Hi cliscinsky,

A bit of time has passed since you brought this up. I'm sorry for the difficulty and confusion you were seeing here. I just wanted to check in and see if you had returned from your vacation and if you had a chance to check out if things were working normally for your system. If you're having any issues, please let me know and I'll be happy to work on this with you. Also, I appreciate the input, @CBFox!

Thanks,

Jeff

Turned out that our issue ended up being a blown capacitor on our AC unit.  Our technician said that older capacitors tend to go bad in excessive heat.  Our outdoor temperatures were over 100 degrees for several days when ours went bad.  So, the nest thermostat was doing its job trying to cool the house down to its set temperature, but the AC unit could not properly turn on to cool the house.

Thanks for the update, clisninsky. It's good to know what caused the issue, but too bad it wasn't an easier solution!

As we have our answer here, I can mark this one as resolved, but before I do, is there anything else you might need?

Thanks,

Jeff
