Multi stage 3rd Gen

We just bought a new system and have two 3rd gen nest thermostats with 2 stage hvac systems.  I am wanting to make sure we are taking advantage of our system.  How do I know that the system is running in two stage mode?  What settings do I need to do on the thermostats to make them right?

Hello Jjearth,

Thanks for reaching out here in the Google Nest Community. I'd be happy to take a look at this for you.

Congratulations on your new system and Nest Thermostats! To ensure your two-stage HVAC system is running efficiently, here are some steps you can take:

  • Make sure that your thermostats are correctly wired to support two-stage heating and cooling. You can share with us your thermostat wiring setup.
  • Activate your heating or cooling system and observe its behavior. A two-stage system typically runs in the first stage initially and switches to the second stage if needed for more extreme temperatures. During milder conditions, it may operate only in the first stage to conserve energy.
  • Adjust the temperature differential settings, which determine when the system switches between the first and second stages. Turn the temperature at least 10 degrees from the current temperature until the second stage appears on the display.

If you encounter any challenges, please let me know—we're here to help!

Warm regards,
Mark
