Nest Battery Issues

We bought our house 2 years ago, and it came with a Nest Learning Thermostat. I have no idea how old the thermostat is, but the previous owners did leave the box it came in. Anyway, for 2 years, we have only had small issues with the thermostat.

This morning, I woke up and the house felt colder than usual. We live in Michigan and are in the middle of a cold snap, so I didn’t think much of it. I glanced at the little thermometer in our kitchen and was shocked when it said that the in house temperature was 55 degrees (we typically keep it at 65-67). I went to adjust the thermostat and was greeted by a dark screen with a flashing red light on top. After a bit of troubleshooting, I saw that it was a low battery issue and decided to let it try to charge itself while we went out and ran some errands. The thermostat was still blinking red when we got home, but according to the thermometer in the kitchen, the furnace must have kicked on because it had gotten up to 64 degrees.

I plugged the thermostat in to a USB charger for about an hour, which seemed to do the trick. It booted right up, and I was able to connect the thermostat to the WiFi for the first time in almost a year. However, the thermostat was showing an in-house temperature almost 10 degrees higher than what it actually was. I set the heat to what the thermostat said the temperature was in hopes that they would sync up and then I could dial it back to our usual temps. Still warming, so no update yet as to whether or not that is working.

My concern is that in the settings menu, the “Nest App” icon is showing low battery (not sure what this means). The current power readings in the Technical menu are:

Battery: 3.666 V (fluctuates slightly, but holding fairly steady)

Voc: 37.23 V

Vin: 33.61 V

Lin: 40 mA

Thank you in advance for any insight!

Hi CaptainSlow33,

Thank you for your posting.

Give these steps a whirl:

Ensure that the wires are connected properly
Remove the thermostat display from its base and check if any connector pins are bent.
If the issue persists, contact a pro installer to discuss your options.

Keep us posted.

Best,
Mel
