Nest Compatibility

Grokkin
Community Member

I have a two stage system with a heat pump. Would love to switch over to Nest. I contacted support and they said it wasn’t compatible. However, my doorman said that some people in my building have Nest so I think the support person might be wrong. Below is a link to a picture of my current thermostat. It’s pretty old and I don’t think it opens from the front.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Grokkin,

Thanks for posting here in the Community forum and for showing interest in our Nest Thermostats. What is the make and model of your HVAC system? Could you share a photo of your control panel showing where the thermostat wires are connected? And could you share with me a photo of your thermostat showing to what terminal the wires are connected?

Keep us posted.

Best,

Zoe

Hi Zoe,

Sorry for the delay. I uploaded the photos you asked for on imgur: https://imgur.com/a/YyRRp8X

The system is a Whalen, Model: VI-A-602-BO, Voltage: 208-230, Hertz: 60

Thank you so much for your help!

Hi there Grokkin,

Thanks for sharing the link for the photo of the wires connected to your current thermostat. Unfortunately, there are no labels of the terminals where the wires are connected that we can use to identify the main function of each wire. I'd like to review your case. Could you please provide your case ID number provided by the support who assisted you? You can find it in your email on the day you contacted us.

Regards,

Jenelyn

I cannot figure out a way to open the thermostat to see where exactly the wires are connected to. That said, in the first photo you can see what each color corresponds to.

The case ID number is: 4-6926000035815

Thank you for your help!

Hey Grokkin,

Thanks for providing your case ID number. Most systems are using the standard color of the wires, but we should not depend on that. If one or more wires in your current thermostat doesn’t have a label, don’t guess. You’ll need to know what wires are connected to your current thermostat before you can install your Nest thermostat.

You can use most of the other methods to determine which labels to use: check your system’s manual, contact a local professional, or look at your system’s control board.

For your reference, you can visit this support article about Identify a thermostat wire.

All the best,

Jenelyn
