Nest-E Issues

Hi all,

So I have a IDeal Logic 24 combi boiler and a Nest-E thermostat.  Nest-E is on a stand and plugged into wall socket, Heat-Link is in same place as old thermostat using same wired cable. All shows fine, can access from Nest app/webpage and shows in the connected list of my router ok.

I have a Ideal programmer in the boiler, boiler is set to run mode and it uses the programmer in the boiler to determine when to turn on/off heating and it uses Nest-E purely to tell it what temp to be. This has worked fine for a few months.

If I set boiler to continuous, then this effectively bypasses the programmer and the boiler uses Nest Schedule and Nest to set the temp.

If I use continuous mode issues arise.  I've turned off pre-heat as well as other settings, I've setup the schedule, nest turns on the heating at the given times BUT it also turns on the heating in at times outside my schedule and I don't seem to be able to stop it.  I only want heating to come on when I told it to in the schedule I set it to.  I tried several times but gave up so I have left it in Run mode and let the programmer in boiler turn heating on and off and I simply use Nest-E to adjust the temperature I want it to be.  In Run mode Nest isn't able to turn the heating on so although Nest-E tells me in History it turned boiler on at 1am for example, it in fact hasn't.

This is now more of a issue as the inbuilt programmer looses the date/time every time the power goes out and unfortunately my power does tend to go out for a few seconds here and there due to over head power lines so now the end result is the power comes back on, programmer doesn't know date/time so my boiler ends up running all the time and it wont even take temps from Nest either so I'm considering options.

1) Remove inbuilt programmer, buy blanking plate for it and then let Nest-E control it fully *IF* can some how stop it turning on when it wants to outside of my set schedule.

2) Buy a replacement programmer (which has only lasted 6 years) and hope it works and not some other issue

3) remove inbuilt programmer, get blanking plate for it and then buy a different smart thermostat like maybe Nest Learning, if it has more control or something else if anyone has recommendations?

I went with Nest because it was wired in so ran from mains which I felt would be better than battery system like Hive and better to have run on mains but have a battery backup for the brief power outages

Thanks for any advise.

Kev

Hi there, @kev2022,

Thanks for letting me know. As I'm not specialized on any boiler or another type of programmer, I can assist you on only how the device works. In order for the thermostat and Heat Link to function properly, they need to be set up and wired according to the installation guide which states that the Nest Heat Link needs to be connected directly to the heating valve and to the mains. Once it's done so, we can investigate the out of schedule turning on by running some tests with you. Also, I would recommend having an electrician on the spot when that happens and for him to contact us on our live phone support line.

Hi,

The nest still wants to turn out outside of schedule hours some times but not all the time, it seems to vary.

I'm going to switch boiler to const on and let Nest take over fully and see how it goes when i can as my dad isn't well at the moment.

Thanks

Kev

Thanks for letting us know. Does this still happen? And does the display go orange currently or does it show that the heating should be off, but the system is still on at the moment? Or has the behavior not occured again?
