Have used a nest gen3 thermostat for about 3 years. Yesterday it went blank - screen black with tiny flashing green light (possibly indicating software update?). It’s stayed like this and won’t respond to any commands or attempts to reboot (have held down for 10 seconds; removed from wall; attempted to charge with usb). No suggestions from support as yet. Anyone any ideas? If buy new unit (same model) put on original base should it work (getting desperate no heating or hot water!)

OK that's one good result with power to the Heat Link. That means you can operate in manual overide, by pressing the centre button on the Heat Link. 3 lights will show on the box, meaning all good. This will fire up you boiler, but please remember you do NOT have room thermostat control via your display obviously. This means yes you will have heat/water, but do not leave in manual mode while you are not in the home. Assuming you have radiator valves, they will control your individual rads, but just keep an eye on the room tempreture as the boiler will work with it's thermostat only.
This just gives you a littel get out of jail until we work out the issue.
Something you can try is the following. Remove the display from the connector plate/wall, you now have just the diplsy in your hand. Squeeze the display together like you would a hamburger, at the same time look at the screen. Keep the display squeezed until you see the green light change to an orange light, this will happen after a few seconds, keep squeezed. The light should go green again, but keep squeezed and see if you see the littel house show on the display, if shows then release. Should you just have the screen black and the green light flashing the same, do EXACTLY the same again. Againg, should the screen still be just black, THEN plug your usb into the back of the display and leave for a good hour plus.
Regarding buying another display and will it work, simple answer is yes.

The green light first of all is not anything to do with software, so you can rule that out.
Can you still see the thermostat in the app, and does the heating respond via the app still?
Your display is it wired on the wall or wireless on a stand?
I assume you have lights on the Heat Link?

The thermostat is offline on app.
The thermostat is wall mounted.
There is a light on in the heat link.

That’s really helpful- I had no idea could use heatlink manually! I tried squeezing the thermostat - did get an orange light but no display at all. Have ordered a new thermostat so hopefully that will work when it arrives!

Sounds like a battery issue.
Pity we didn't get any further, I sell displays!!!!!!!

I’d contacted Google support about this and despite the thermostat being about a year over its 2 year warranty they’re replacing it free of charge 😊.

I have the same issue and when I squeeze it like you said, the light turns orange then red, and back to green when I am done squeezing. I put it back on the wall but it never showed the little house show on display

Would contact google support also - they’re replacing mine free of charge!

Just remember, Google might well be replacing a part, but here in the UK we have Consumer Law.😣
That means, your item is covered for about 5 years for that type of value thermostat. Once Google replace, the retailer/Installer washes their hands of any claim. Just remember that, and look up Consumer Law for any other item you have purchased for the future.
