Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd Gen) fully charged with blinking green light, but screen blank

Hi, my Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd Gen) was running fine the past two years. This year, I left the thermostat power off over the summer, and recently tried turning it on again. There was a blinking orange light which I understood means low battery, so I removed it and plugged it into the wall charger. The light changed to a blinking green light, but the screen still remained dark, even after I mounted it back into the base.

I tried restarting it by mounting it and pressing it down for 10 seconds. The light blinked orange once, then went back to blinking green again and the screen is still dark. I've plugged it back into my wall charger. It's been there for more than a day, and still shows the green blinking light and a dark screen.

I can hear clicking though when I turn the bezel, and my furnace activated after I turned it clockwise far enough, so it appears the actual thermostat is working but the display isn't. I have no idea what temperature the thermostat is set to since the screen is blank. I'm unable to connect it to my phone app since I can't see the activation code on the display, and I unfortunately removed it from my app while trying to troubleshoot.

Will appreciate any help I can get. There is no physical damage to my Nest thermostat; I did not drop it or anything like that. Why is the screen dark? Is there any way to do a hard reset? Is there anyway I can get the thermostat to work, or is it now permanently defective?

Contacted the warranty department. Was told that my LCD screen appears to be broken, and Google cannot provide a replacement because I bought it 2 yr 4 mths ago but the warranty is only for 2 years, and there is nothing else they can do.

Anyone knows whether this is a common occurrence? Is it normal for Nest learning thermostat LCD screens to break right after the warranty expires? Should I shell out another $200+ for a replacement, or switch to a different brand/product? Or is there any way to fix the one I have?

Same-ish problem,

Since an update on November 2nd my less than one year old gen 3 Nest Learning Thermostat has now stopped working three times now due to a battery /charging issue.  The first two times it actually charged on my desk using its USB port.

When connected to its base and I check its "Power" readouts though its settings menu it shows:

Battery - 3.852 V

Vin - 32.45 V

Vout - 32.45 V

lin - 200 mA(c)

All appear to be expected readouts.

It will no longer charge at all a green LED blinks constantly and the screen displays "Please attach the display to its base".

Prior to Nov 2nd it worked flawlessly.

My thermostat screen is still blank. It appears to be working, as I can hear clicking when I rotate the bezel. But the screen is blank, so I have no idea what temperature it is set to, and I can't see the activation code to connect it to the Nest app. Any idea how I can get the screen to work again?

Mine is blank w a blinking green light, has been stuck this way for a few days despite removing and re attaching the unit from the wall.  Tried charging but no luck.  Any recommendations?

I am having the same issue with mine as well. No matter how much I charge it, it says connect to base, then it just shuts down. It is also showing a blinking orange and green light. To top it off, is has the wifi issues so it won't connect to my network and I cannot get any info about it in the Nest app. Any resolution for this one?

Mine's been replaced by Google.

The same issue. The device went black, only the green led blinking. When pressed for more than 10 sec, the led becomes orange for a while and then again started to blink green. No idea how to fix it 😞 maybe disconnecting the internal battery will help? any idea?

Hi Gorg,

Thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry to hear that you're having an issue with your Nest Thermostat. I'd love to know more about this. How is your Nest Thermostat wired? Also, could you try charging your Nest Thermostat using a USB cable for 30 mins?

Keep us posted.

Thanks,

Edward

Hi Jake,

sorry for the late reply. I am using Nest Thermostat wired with Heat Link. I've disconnected it and tried to charge it, but it does not help. The screen is black all the time, and the green led is blinking.
