Wondering if this wiring setup works with latest Nest Learning Thermostat?

Your thermostat wires are a stranded wire and also you’ll probably find that your system is operating at 120 V AC. Nest thermostat only operate on a 24 V AC.  Use a multimeter, set it on AC voltage and measure the voltage between the R and the C and see what you get.
