Nest Learning Thermostat and Aprilaire 550

My home has a standalone humidifier, Aprilaire 550, which is plugged into an Aprilaire 4655 manual humidistat. The humidistat currently has a red wire and a white wire plugged into it. There is also a blue wire in the same sleeve unconnected to anything. I understand from Google's guide that the Learning Thermostat can handle humidifier operations through the asterisk port. What is not clear to me is what goes where.

  1. Do I run the red wire (live?) to the asterisk and nothing else?
  2. Do I run the red to the asterisk and the white elsewhere?
  3. Do I ignore the blue wire?

I had a question a few months back that gave me a lot of general information about humidistats and humidifiers, but I still don't know what Nest wants me to plug where and why.

Edit: The pro installer guide tells me that my current setup, which has Rc power connected, does not power the asterisk / star connector. This tells me that one of the humidistat wires should likely go to Rh, which would power that connector.

Hi MisterV1,

Thanks for posting here in the Community forum and for showing interest in our Nest Thermostats. Google Nest Learning Thermostats are compatible with most whole-home humidifiers and dehumidifiers that work independently from your air conditioner. However, professional installation is strongly recommended. Learn more about humidifier and dehumidifier compatibility here in this article.

Keep us posted. We're happy to help.

Best,

Zoe
