So as I understand it it's now MANDATORY to migrate to the Google Home App in order to use the remote functionality on the nest thermostat?!!!

No that's not the case, I'm not sure where you've read that or been misinformed.

However, if you'd like to use the updated Alexa skill that is only compatible with Google accounts, so you would need to migrate in that case.

You're not aware of this? As of September 29, 2023, Works with Nest (WWN) connections no longer work. You can continue to automate your home through Works with Google Home (WWGH) by creating Routines in the Google Home app's "Automations" tab or script editor, available now in Public Preview.

WWN WAS used to remote control thermostats using the phone app.  NOW we're being FORCED to migrate to WWGH if we want to use the remote feature again!!  Without migration the REMOTE WILL NOT WORK!

Ah you're referring to the Works with Nest deprecation. The Alexa update is more recent so I assumed you were referring to that, my apologies.
