Hello I have a nest thermostat that I just hooked up. When I did the initial test on the website to see if it was compatible I entered the following wires Rc, R, Y, C, W, G with a jumper and it said that it was compatible. When I began the instilation it ask me to list the wires again and I did. It then told me that it wasn't compatible with my system however I found that hard to belive so I continued anyways by only listing that I had an R wire only to receive the no R wire connected error. I then factory reset the device and when prompted to enter the wire types a second time I only entered that I had an Rc wire and no R wire and the system is now working. In my original thermostat the R and Rc terminals where connected by a small permanent metal clip which I believed to be a jumper clip. My question is, what is the difference between an R and Rc wire and is it harmful to my HVAC system to have only listed that I had an Rc wire and no R wire.

Also to note, in my initial thermostat the wire was connected to the R terminal not the Rc terminal. Thanks for any help or advice.

Hi Kurtis24,
Thanks for reaching out. Instead of using jumper wires, Nest Learning Thermostats use an internal jumper between the Rh and Rc connectors. A Nest Learning Thermostat will automatically use this internal jumper if your system needs it. You can also click on this link to learn more about this.
Thanks,
Edward
