Nest Remote Temperature Sensor Tied To Old Account

I recently deleted a Nest account from my home.  I did not "remove" my remote sensor prior to deleting the account.  I am unable to connect the remote sensor to my new Nest account because it is associated with my old account.

Is there anyway to break the association between the remote sensor and my old Nest account?  Otherwise I will just have to toss it in the trash.

Any help would be appreciated.

Remove the batteries from the sensor and leave them removed for at least 48 hours, then reinsert the batteries. Leaving the batteries out for this long factory resets the sensor.
