Nest Says heating, but furnace not coming on occassionally

RobertBradley21

A couple of times per week I'll walk by my Nest 2.0 and see the orange light is on as if it's heating, but the furnace will be off. Turning the dial below the current temp, then back up (left then right), starts it up. Turning the dial to the right only (making the set temp hotter) does not work. Turning off and on also works. I'd say this happens 1 out of 50 times the thermostat tries to turn on, but when it happens will not fix itself. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Same issue here although it happens every day now and seems to be getting progressively worse. The Nest team is no help at all. Evidently they do not need heat in Panama or the Philippines. The only way I've been able to get my furnace to come on is by removing it from the wall and reinstalling it onto the base. After doing my research, I've come to find out that, although they may look very high quality, internally they are not. As far as "smart" is concerned, they are anything but. I recommend doing your research on a replacement and checking on what your furnace manufacturer recommends.

Similar problem here. I can start the fan and get the heat going.  However I found if left for 1-2 hours it goes back to normal.  Not happy with this as I do not understand why

Hello folks,

I'm sorry for the trouble this may have caused everyone — let's see what's going on.

To isolate:

  • What type of Nest Thermostat do you have?
  • Did you select the correct fuel type? You can verify it in the Equipment settings.
  • Do the LED lights blink on the HVAC control board?
  • When was the last time you changed the furnace's air filter? A clogged air filter can cause an HVAC system not to activate.
  • Have you experienced extremely cold weather lately?
  • Do you see any wiring reports or message codes?
  • Please check the power readouts on your thermostats on "Technical Info" settings for the Nest Learning Thermostat or Nest Thermostat E and "Equipment" settings for the Nest Thermostat 2020.

I'll look forward to your response.

Regards,

Mark

The fix was to replace the Nest Thermostat with an Ecobee. The problem is now solved.

Hi Mark, thanks for your help!

I have the 2nd gen learning model. The model works 95% of the time, so I'm sure I have the right fuel source. I'm not sure where to find the "HVAC control board". Good thinking about the air filter - it needs a change! I'll try that. No message codes, the screen just glows orange, as if heating, but no heat comes out. Power readings are: Battery: 3.755V, Voc: 8.32V, Vin 8.32V. I noticed it hasn't been connected to my network in months - just the Nest App. Maybe that's part of the problem.

Thanks again!

Robert

Hi there,

I'm sad to see you go, @DTMHoban. We hope we can make it up to you in the future. Feel free to create a new post if you change your mind.

@RobertBradley21, it appears that you're experiencing power issues, based on the readouts. Do you have a C-wire connected to your thermostat base? Installing a common wire might help deliver constant power to it. When the thermostat drains its battery, some of the smart features will be disabled in order to save power. Also, try changing the air filter and wait for a while to see the changes.

Please let me know if you need more help.

Thanks,

Mark
