Nest Thermostat 3rd Gen won't hold a charge (3 yrs old)

My 3 year old Nest Thermostat 3rd gen won't hold a charge. I've gone through all the troubleshooting tips and went through several rounds with tech support. That was useless - the 2nd person tried to tell me it was a wifi signal issue (after the previous agent had me charge using USB and turn off the wifi to see if it would stay charged). At the end of that they told me I'd have to buy a new unit and there was nothing they could do because it was out of warranty.

I see that this is not a unique issue but the previous conversation on this was locked when the specialist determined that the issue had been resolved (user fixed it by replacing with a non-Nest thermostat! hah!).https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Nest-Thermostats/My-2-year-old-Nest-Thermostat-is-not-holding...

Is this a common problem to have the battery die after only 3 years? I'm not about to spend another $250 for something that's not going to last more than a few years. I realize these things were not built to be serviceable so I'm surprised Google wouldn't be willing to do something (i.e. rebate or discount) for units that fail early but outside the warranty. Anyone else with this issue have any luck getting support?

Hi Jake - I am having the same issue with my Gen 3. I’ve charged it with the USB for hours and it only holds a charge for about 20 minutes. I’ve also tried a factory reset and that hasn’t worked either. This was an expensive thermostat to only get a few years out of. Please help. Thanks
