Nest Thermostat Heating Issue

tgkirschbaum
Community Member

My Nest thermostat is not working properly. I have had it installed since September and it was working fine up until last week. Then all of a sudden, overnight, the house would drop to below my sleep schedule temperature and remain at that temperature well past my comfort schedule. It is connected to Wifi, battery levels are good, I have tried deleting my schedules and leaving heat on, nothing seems to resolve the issue. My comfort schedule is set to begin at 7:00a.m. and it is now 9:20a.m. and my house is still 10 degrees colder than it is supposed to be. Every once in awhile the furnace kicks on and begins heating, but then stops within 5 minutes with maybe 1 degree temperature change. PLEASE HELP!

Hello tgkirschbaum,

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your inquiry. I'd be happy to take a look at this for you.

To isolate:

  • What type of Nest Thermostat do you have?
  • Is there a C-wire or a Nest Power Connector installed?
  • Do you see any delay timers appearing on your thermostat's screen?
  • Please gather the power readings on its "Equipment" settings if you have the Nest Thermostat 2020 model and the "Technical Info" for the Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Thermostat E.

I'll look forward to your response.

Regards,

Mark

Mark,

I have the standard Google Nest thermostat, model Thermostat 1-4. There is no c-wire connected. A 2+ delay message was shown on the thermostat this morning in order to meet my comfort setting after ending the sleep schedule and this just started happening within the last 3 weeks. The additional information you requested is below:
  • Vin: 32.018 V
    • lin: 385
  • PS: Y-395, YS-254, YP-2, W-10
Nest power connector not detected.

Please let me know if you need anything else from me to help me resolve the recurring issues I'm having.

Hi there,

Thanks for the details. Most likely, this causes a power-related issue in which your thermostat was able to send a signal to your system, but your system isn't enough to sustain what it needs and will show a delay timer on its screen. Let's see what's going on.

Please make sure that your thermostat's software version is up-to-date and try to run a power test. If the Nest Power Connector is still not detected, please share with us a picture of how it was installed.

Let me know how it goes.

Best,

Mark

Hello there,

I just wanted to follow up to see if you still need our help. Please let us know as we would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

I appreciate the help, Mark.

Thanks,

Archie

Archie & Mark,

My system software is up to date. When I just ran a power test, the following was displayed:

  • Vin: 31.289 V
    • lin: 385
  • PS: Y-385, YP-2

When I navigate to the "Power Connecter" --> "Power Status" screen on my Nest thermostat, the connector shows that it's disconnected. My wiring was set up when installed as follows: Y-W-G-R.

*update* I just now realized that the power connector is a separate adapter that is/was not included in the out-of-the-box thermostat that I purchased. I assumed your recommendation would be to purchase the additional power connector and install it to try and solve this issue?

Let me know if you need anything else. Thank you.

Hello tgkirschbaum,

It's me again, and thanks for the additional details. Could you please share with us photos of your previous and current thermostat's wiring?

Thanks,

Mark

Hi there,

I'm checking back in — how's it going? I hope you were able to share the photos so we can move forward.

Thanks,

Mark

Hi tgkirschbaum,

Thanks for sharing your thermostat's photo. To make sure that everything was covered, could you please try activating your AC and let us know if it works? If so, switch it back to heating and turn on the system. If the same issue persists, perform a factory data reset to bring it back to its default settings and proceed by adding it again in the Google Home app.

Keep me posted if that helps.

Regards,

Mark

Hey there,

I'm checking back in. Were you able to do the steps above? I'd be glad to hear from you — I'd like to make sure everything is working.

Thanks,

Mark
