Nest Thermostat Not Behaving Appropriately

I have had my nest thermostat for almost five years...all was well until ~6 months ago.  It started...well acting stupid...over the winter it would always set things to be to cold...and well now...

Its 60 degrees outside currently...when I got home the temperature in my living room (where the thermostat is) was 72 degrees...it was set to heat mode at 70 degrees...so I change it to cool and set the temp to 68 and turn the fan on...I was actually tidying up my living room and was in front of it then entire ~1.5 hours.  I realize I am sweating my a** off...I check it...it reset to heat mode with a setting of 74 degrees and the temperature in the room was 76...

I do have location enabled...and according to the app it states I am home...as far as if it is a scheduling issue...I never set the heat higher than 70 or cool lower than 68.

During the winter it basically did the opposite...would reset itself to cooling to an inappropriately low temperature...made my energy bills ridiculous...finally resorted to using node red and home assistant to monitor what it was doing to keep it inline.

Any thoughts?  If not its node red time tonight

Hi Mike5879,

Yikes! I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with your Nest Thermostat. Erratic behavior like the one you described can be frustrating. Here are a few suggestions to troubleshoot the problem:

  1. Ensure that the location settings on your thermostat and in the accompanying app are correctly configured. Sometimes, incorrect location detection can cause the thermostat to behave unexpectedly. Verify that the app accurately reflects your presence at home.
  2. It's possible that the temperature sensor in your thermostat may be malfunctioning or experiencing inaccuracies. Check if the sensor is clean and not obstructed by any objects.
  3. Double-check your thermostat's scheduling settings to ensure they are correctly configured. Make sure that there are no conflicting schedules or unexpected changes in temperature settings. Resetting the schedules to default and reprogramming them from scratch might help.
  4. Make sure that your Nest Thermostat is running the latest firmware. Firmware updates often include bug fixes and improvements that can address issues with thermostat behavior. Check the manufacturer's website or the Nest app for any available updates.

If you are comfortable with using Node-RED and Home Assistant to monitor and control your thermostat, those solutions can offer additional flexibility and customization. However, it's still a good idea to address the underlying issues with the thermostat itself to ensure reliable and accurate operation.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Zoe
