Nest Thermostat When the Internet/Wifi goes out

DanielK3

My nest works perfectly when when power and internet are on. But if the internet goes out (power is still on), my wifi goes out, I would think the nest would still be able to heat/cool.  But it doesn't. the Nest is on but doesn't record the temperature and so doesn't know to heat or cool.

I would think there is a setting where the nest can work on a good old fashion non-smart thermostat.

Thoughts?

Google should clearly warn potential buyers that these thermostats are not suitable for second homes

I’m at home. The nest device is looking for WiFi and not being able to set the temperature. I literally can’t do it manually

Hello everyone,

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your inquiry.

I understand your input, @Georgebob. Potential buyers deserve accurate information to make informed decisions. Our Google Nest Help Center and Google Nest Community are open books for checking information.

@Dkheel3, In cases where the internet is down, the Nest thermostat should still function locally to control your heating or cooling based on its last known settings. However, it seems like your device is unable to operate without a WiFi connection.

  • One possible solution to this issue could be to check if your Nest Thermostat's software is up-to-date. Sometimes, updates include improvements and bug fixes that might address connectivity issues.
  • Additionally, Nest thermostats typically have a manual control option on the device itself. If the internet is down, you should still be able to adjust the temperature manually on the thermostat itself. It doesn’t have a touch screen. Use the touch bar on the right side to control your thermostat. Swipe up to raise the temperature, swipe down to lower it, and tap to confirm. The display will show you how many minutes until your desired temperature is reached.

Let me know if you have more questions.

Best,
Mark
