Nest Thermostat and 2-Stage Heat Pump

I have a 2-stage heat pump. Is there anything I can do to let the system run on stage 1 heating  for longer before it switches to stage 2?

I have gone around on this issue for three years since I installed a Gen 3 Nest.  No one including Nest Pro or the support group can answer the question.  The only solution I have seen is get an Ecobee.  They allow the setting change.  My system is radiant and forced hot air.  Roughly 30 minutes after heat 1 starts, 2 comes on no matter what the variant is.  Very annoying and I don't want to disconnect 2 for times when it's needed.  Oh well....just something they can't do.

Hey all,

Sorry for the late reply. I wanted to follow up and ensure you are good to go. Please let me know if you are still having any trouble from here, as I would be happy to take a closer look and assist you further.

Best regards,
Jake

Hello Jake, it looked like from the nest documentation that Heat Stage 2 could be adjusted by a Nest Pro with the correct code. After chasing this down for years (that’s right!) nest says it can’t be done. The algorithm is too smart I guess. Too bad. I’ll give it fall of this year and then probably change out to Ecobee. They allow this function to be user altered. I just want heat 2 to come ONLY of the temp difference is greater than 4 degrees and ignore how long it’s on.

That the company tells us we cannot have control over stage 1 separate from stage 2 is unacceptable. I have a 2 stage system to save money and therefore energy.  I could go on, but I will let this moment pass. I am sorry I bought this thermostat. It will go back into the box and removed from my wall. If the supplier takes it back, fine. If not, one quick hammer blow and into the wastebasket it will go.

All good here. The simple answer was to have the heat only operate on stage one. I disabled stage two heat. Solved my problem, system runs longer and controls humidity better.

That's great.  Can you share how to disable stage 2?

Equipment-Pro Setup. Then at the wiring diagram, scroll to Y2 terminal and select it. Select Type, then scroll through the options and select option for Stage 2 Cooling only.

How did you do this?

Tried that but stage 2 is needed on really cold days and when coming off “away” for an extended period.

To disable stage two heating I disconnected the wire on the thermostat.  Not ideal but as it take a very long time to come up to temp if we have been away.  At least it's better than having Heat 2 come on when you don't want it.
