Nest Thermostat only seems to start cooling house once you walk past it

I live in a townhouse and bought the Nest Thermostat because I liked the idea of programing schedules for when I'm away at work vs at home, and so I could change the temp from my phone and not have to be on the same floor as the Thermostat.

I've noticed however, that unless I walk past my thermostat, it won't kick in the cooling or heating at all.  For example, I normally set the house during the day to 72, but several times, I've gone been passing the thermostat and it will be warmer, and once I noticed it, the fans start kicking in to cool the house.  It's almost like I caught the thermostat asleep and it kicks in only when I notice it too.

None of the Presence sensing setting are turned on, mostly because last time I tried it, while away, I came back home to a house that was 84 when I had previously set eco mode to 78.  My cat was very upset about how hot it was.

I just want the temperature to match the schedule I put into my device, that's it.

Hi @ggemellos,

First I would like to thank you for posting in our community page, on the other hand I apologize for the inconvenience that you are having with your Thermostat. Let me tell you some troubleshooting steps that you can try to fix the problem.

That's definitely frustrating! It sounds like your Nest Thermostat isn't following your programmed schedule as expected. Here are a few things to check that might be causing this issue:

1. Nest App Settings:

Auto-Schedule: Double-check that the "Auto-Schedule" feature in the Nest app is turned off. This feature might be overriding your programmed schedule based on your phone's location.

Home/Away Assist: Ensure "Home/Away Assist" is also disabled. This feature uses your phone's location to determine if you're home and adjusts the temperature accordingly.

Schedule Verification: Review your programmed schedule in the Nest app to confirm the desired temperatures for when you're away at work.

2. Nest Thermostat Settings:

System Mode: Verify that the Nest thermostat itself is set to either "Heat" or "Cool" mode, not "Eco" or "Off." In Eco mode, the Nest won't activate heating or cooling unless the temperature deviates significantly from your schedule.

Temperature Display: Make sure the Nest thermostat is displaying the actual room temperature, not just the target temperature. This will help you confirm if it's matching your schedule.

3. Network Connectivity:

  • Wi-Fi Signal Strength: Ensure your Nest thermostat has a strong and stable Wi-Fi connection. A weak signal could cause delays or disruptions in communication with the Nest app and schedule updates.

4. Nest Software Updates:

  • App and Thermostat Updates: Check for and install any available software updates for both the Nest app and the Nest thermostat itself. Updates often include bug fixes and performance improvements.

If for some reason you still have the same issue don't hesitate to let us know.

Regards,

Mario.
