Nest Thermostat stuck at "Continue setup in the Google Home app".

I’ve previously set up a basic Nest thermostat at a rental property, and it’s been working well. However, now the current guest is saying that the thermostat is stuck at the "Continue setup in the Google Home app" message, so they must have managed to reset it. Manually controlling the thermostat by tapping it on the right side doesn’t appear to be working in this state, and the thermostat is offline in the Google Home app. Unfortunately, I’m very remote from the property currently, so I can’t go there to fix it. Are there steps that can be done now to get the unit working again, or at least allow it to be controlled manually?

Remove the thermostat that is showing offline from the Google Home app, then set it up again from the Google Home app. Check this link for more information: Get started with your Nest Thermostat

Hi folks,

@Anonymous, thanks for the help!

@bcowhig, how's it going with your Nest Thermostat? Still need our help?

@Supermom4, thanks for posting. I'm sorry to hear that you're having an issue with your Nest Thermostat. To isolate the issue, could you try removing the Nest Thermostat on your Google Home app and try adding it again?

Thanks,

Edward

Firstly, thanks to everyone (esp. @eveluna, @EdwardT ) for your input. My main concern was that the setup of the Nest usually requires the Google Home app to be local to the Nest (in order to connect directly (perhaps via Bluetooth?), scan the QR code, etc., but it looks like I could use the setup code at the back of the unit (or the guest could send me a photo of the QR code).

The guests onsite are a retired German couple who are not tech savvy nor strong in English. I've reached out to them to suggest that we try to complete the setup, but I'm not even sure that they would be comfortable pulling the thermostat off its base in order to access the QR/setup codes at the back. At this point, they've indicated that they are comfortable enough with the current temperature to go without fixing the thermostat. I should be able to set things right when I access the location after the guests have departed.

If the guests change their mind and we move forward with fixing the Nest, then I"ll update this discussion. Otherwise, thanks again, and I suppose that you can mark this discussion as closed if I don't update things in a day or two.

The temperature and humidity started increasing beyond a comfortable level again, so we sent a more technical person to the unit and he was able to detach the Nest from the base and communicate the setup code to me. However, the Google Home app was unable to locate the Nest using that code, which was my main concern. This indicates to me that perhaps the app is expecting to be locally connected to the Nest (e.g. via Bluetooth) and is not trying to connect over WiFi, or perhaps the Nest entering setup mode has caused it to disconnect from WiFi.

My objective at this point is simply to get the Nest out of setup mode and to a state where it can at least be manually controlled by the people in the unit. Unfortunately, the Nest documentation I've been able to find so far is quite basic and doesn't support any of the advanced troubleshooting that I'm trying to do in this case. Is there some way to get the Nest to skip setup at this point and simply operate in manual mode until I'm able to visit the unit in person and complete setup with the Home app?

Based on the model, it is dependent on the Home app, and WiFi. However for it to operate manually or without set up on the app is impossible. You need the Nest Learning Thermostat if you want a thermostat that you can operate manually without adding to the app. You need to be there to set it up since it will ask you to connect to WiFi network available etc.

Thanks, @Anonymous . That's one detail that I was unsure of and unable to find covered in the documentation. (I know that having the Home app there locally is the standard setup mode, but nowhere did I see it stated as an absolute requirement.) I also wasn't sure that having the unit return to setup mode causes it to lose its WiFi connectivity, but that also appears to be the case.

Given the failure of the previous visit to the unit (during which the setup code was retrieved from the back of the Nest), I asked another person (not a technician, but someone comfortable with using the app, at least, with me on the phone remotely) to visit the unit and try to complete the setup using the Google Home app locally. Initially we were finally able to get through setup successfully and bring the Nest online, but because we had got the wiring information incorrect, the Nest only had the option to turn on the heat, not the A/C. We redid the setup with the correct wiring information, but when it got to the connectivity stage, the Home app couldn't connect to the Nest unit (even though it had successfully connected minutes earlier). An additional attempt at redoing setup ran into the same connectivity issue.

Finally the setup person had the idea to perform a reset on the Nest, and found the instructions on the Internet. That allowed the setup to pass the connectivity issue and complete, and the Nest was again fully functional and able to cool the unit to a more reasonable temperature.

Ultimately I found it disappointing that the Nest product would allow things to get to such a stage. Given the importance of being able to heat or cool one's property, there should be more support for putting the Nest in a basic mode where it can be controlled manually. It should offer the option to skip setup and operate in basic mode until setup is completed.

Hi bcowhig,

Thanks for the update. I'm glad to hear that it's working now. I understand that having an option to set up the Nest Thermostat as a basic thermostat would be helpful. Our team is always looking for ways to improve and we'll take this as feedback.

Thanks,

Edward
