Nest Thermostats

DCR
Community Member

I had two Nest thermostats professionally installed along with a power connector for each one.

Two issue I can't figure out:

1) In Settings it states while the thermostats will work with the system it needs a power connector or C wire to avoid power issues in the future. However, In Device Information it lists the Power Connector as Connected??

2) I received an alert stating that one of the Thermostats isn't getting consistent power and recommends installing a Power Connector??

The HVAC contractor is at a loss, any help please!

DCR,

In many systems the Nest Learning Thermostat can work without a power common wire. However, if the control board uses digital relays it will not be possible. Now how does it do this? The Y and W wires typically connect to a relay wire coil and on the other end of that coil is the COMMON. The nest can use this wire path to reach the COMMON when a primary wire (Y or W) is not being energized by the thermostat.

I have seen this problem a few times. Basically, the rule of thumb is: if you live in the northern parts of the country, you want to use the Y and R wires, and if you are in the southern parts of the country, you want to use the W and R wires between the Thermostat and the power connecter. Alternatively, Have them run a resistance, test, a crossed the compressor, contactor, coil, and the blower coil and choose the one which has the lowest resistance..

Thank you.

Does it matter that I have radiant floor heat with boiler fired by oil. Do Not have AC.

DCR,

it does not matter what type the heating system is, the nest does know how to work with radiant in floor heating systems. The real key is the controlling system and how it operates. For example, it’s very important that the control system uses a 24 V AC power system in order for the Nest to be compatible, if one of those systems is not using 24 V AC or the voltage is too low or slightly too high it won’t work

the issues with the thermostats have not been resolved and i've received no help or guidance from google. i've come to the conclusion the product is unstable and not reliable. the only thing to do now is remove them and return for a refund. i'm extremely disappointed in google's lack of customer service.

You never posted a single picture of the wires and how they are installed including the Nest Thermostat and the Power Connector. You never stated the the measured resistance between R and W to verify continuity for the advanced feature of the Nest Learning Thermostat. We have tried to help you get this working. So many consumers ask for help without providing all the steps they have attempted. My company has never installed a nest thermostat that was. It working properly before we cleared the job site. I truly wish you the best.

I had a HVac professional install a new 24v transformer and run new thermostat wires.  Everything appeared to be working fine until this morning when I received and alert saying one of my thermostats was not getting consistent power and recommended installing a power connector or a c wire!? Of course this new installation includes a wire!!

I spent over an hour on the phone with Google and they suggest I contact a Nest Pro. So frustrating that they are of no help.

I contacted my HVAC guy and he said he didn't understand why one of the two thermostats would receive an inconsistent power alert when both thermostats share the sam power source.

I reset both thermostats to the original factory setting in the off chance that would clear an error/memory of the previous set up. waiting to see what happens.

Hi DCR,

Thanks for the response. I'd love to know more about this. Could you share a photo of how your Nest Thermostat is wired? Also, what is the power reading of your Nest Thermostat? You can find this information by going to Settings > Technical Info > Power.

Thanks,

Edward
