Nest and Smart TRVs

Hey Product Managers

Are there any plans to *integrate* Nest with Smart TRVs?

There are a lot of messages in this forum from people looking for proper integration between any brand of smart TRV and Nest, not just compatibility but integration.

Integration means that the TRV can tell Nest that it needs more heat from the boiler.
Of course any TRV can control the radiator but whether any heat is available depends on the boiler controller e.g. Nest.

Without integration then I am forced to set the Nest too high and let the Smart TRVs control the temperature in each room, which neatly defeats the ability of Nest to use boiler modulation to ovoid overshoot.

Given that Hive can do this, I'm now exploring to see if it can also do boiler modulation.

Come on Google. Sort it out.

Thanks for reaching out to us here @GreySpike and for your interest in our products. As you mentioned currently the Nest thermostats can work together with TRVs but they work independently. You can read more about how our products work with TRVs here

Thank you for the feedback. We're always looking for ways to improve both our products and services but currently I don't have any information I can share about this subject. Should there be an update, rest assured we'll let everyone know over our official channels.

Hi there, just checking in with you. Do you still need help?

Well, the questions hasn't actually been answered, but then I wasn't really expecting a helpful answer.

I have been doing more research since posting the original question, and perhaps you could provide a more helpful answer, to you and also to me, that perhaps micro zoning using sTRVs is not going to reduce the heating bills, but correctly modulating the boiler, which only Nest currently supports out of the current selection of Smart Thermostats, definitely will.

The argument against micro-zoning can be summarised something like this: modern condensing boilers increase efficiency as the flow temperature is lowered; micro zoning increases flow temperature as the heated rooms lose heat to the lower temperature rooms, so the radiators have to maintain a higher temperature to compensate.
This is also why using a modulating thermostat, smart or not, with a modulating boiler saves money; the boiler only needs to run at a power to match the current heat loss, and not at 100% as would happen with an on/off thermostat.

I still need to find a way to quantify the saving in currency, but it is still a good point to differentiate Nest from other smart thermostats.

Thank you very much for all the feedback. These are certainly factors to consider and we're always looking for ways to improve both our products and services.

When it comes to the compatibility with OpenTherm, modulating, you can read more about it here

As I mentioned, at the moment there is no direct integration with other smart TRV units but should this change, we'll make sure to let everyone know. At the moment any valves installed operate separately from the thermostat.

Hi, I wanted to check in. Is there anything else I can try and assist with?
