Nest complete beginner - advice please.

New Nest user. Re gas boiler and heating system. All linked up ok. I appreciate that ideally one sets up a thermostat system/programme. However, I am a complete novice, and I haven’t got round to that yet. Surely there must be occasions outside of thermostat times, where you come in from the cold, and you want to fire up the heating NOW, and it’s not due to come on for four hours. How do you fire up immediately? And turn it off? i.e manual control or 'kidding' the thermostat or heat sensor into activity.

Hoping to control via iPad or Mac desktop.

Any tips for a new user, from scratch, after connection?

Here are the basic instructions:  https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9248184?hl=en

First, make sure you know which model you have; under the little pictures there's a link for that.  Then scroll down to the section for your model, subsection "Control".  Yes, you can perform a temporary hold in the app, but it's different for the different models.

Thank you. Much appreciated.

Hey StartledJesus,

I wanted to check in with you, and see if you had any further questions from here. Please let me know, as I would be happy to take a closer look.

Thanks so much CBFox for the helpful reply.

Best regards,

Jake

Thanks for your interest. Must admit I’m still struggling at the moment, and cannot seem to make schedules ‘stick’ and come online. Having said that, I’m very busy at the moment and haven’t had time to apply myself to it as much as I would like. Plus it’s not too cold at the moment, so there’s less urgency.

At least I got one reply, which was much appreciated.

Hey StartledJesus,

I am sorry to hear you are still having trouble, but glad to be of help. I found an article that has more details on temperature schedules. Please let me know if that helps out, or if you are still having any trouble. I would be happy to assist further.

Best regards,

Jake

Apparently this thread is about to be locked. Presumably due to lack of engagement. Is this usual? Thanks to the very few that did make the effort to respond. I don’t think I’ll be participating again.

As one who did try to respond helpfully, I'll re-engage.  I'm not sure what you wanted or expected from this forum.  You asked a number of "novice" questions, which I tried to answer.  Why should another forum participant jump in as well, unless my answer was obviously inadequate?  When you wrote again, you said that you were having trouble (but you didn't provide details as to what exactly you tried to do and what exactly the Nest failed to do), and you also said that you were "very busy".  So, at that point, what helpful response could anyone possibly make?  But @Jake tried anyway, sending you another link.  I was waiting until you had time to work with the Nest some more and report back.  (After all, I'm just a Nest owner like yourself, and may be "very busy", too.)

I did thank you, did I not, and other respondents? For your information, I am doing exactly what you suggested and working my way through the details of those responses, with a view to reporting back. I apologise if I am doing that too slowly for anybody. The ‘busy’ comment was an attempt to explain, in advance, why I might not be online for a while, not a criticism of anyone. Jake asked me how I was doing, so I told him honestly.

The trigger for my last post was not for any lack of response, but being informed that the thread was being closed, by another poster, which seemed a bit previous, to say the least. You have now exacerbated the issue with a snarky reply, which was uncalled for. Thank you for being so welcoming to the board. Sorry for troubling you.

Sorry!  Genuinely sorry to sound snarky.  I thought you were asking why you didn't get more advice from participants.
