Nest filter change frequency less than 1000 h

The change filter reminder is supposed to come after 1000 h of operation.  I have been getting reminders after about 500 to 600 h of operation, based on the hours of operation from the monthly Nest reports.  (I started keeping records after noticing the reminders are more often than expected.)  My furnace/AC fan is set to operate only when heating or cooling is on.   I know 500-600 h are long enough.  Are there other factors such as elapsed time that affect the reminder?

Hi KeeF,

Thanks for posting! Sorry for the delay on my end. You're right, there seems to be a discrepancy between the expected 1000 hours and your Nest reminding you to change the filter after 500-600 hours. While run time is the main factor, the Nest Help article Air filters and filter reminders might shed light on how to adjust the reminder frequency and set custom intervals for each notification.

Let me know how it goes!

Regards,

Ivan

Hi Ivan,

The Air filters and filter reminders page that you directed me to does NOT have any information on addressing this issue.  It just tells me how to turn on or off filter reminders.  It appears that there is a glitch in the program, but it boggles my mind, since it should be a simple summation algorithm.

Hi @KeeF,

Thanks for reaching out here in the community. I'm sorry for the delayed response.

The filter reminder is a feature, and it evaluates how often your system runs to estimate when you need to change the filter. So if you don’t turn cooling mode on much in the summer, you may go months without a reminder from your Nest thermostat. But if it’s a very cold winter and the heating runs a lot, you may get reminders more often.

However, you can consider performing a factory reset on the device. This involves deleting all settings, removing the Nest thermostat from the app, and adding it again. You can refer to the next article for instructions: Reset a Nest thermostat. After that, turn on the air filter reminders again and monitor if the behavior persists.

Please keep me updated.

Best regards,

Jenniffer

Hi jenniffert,

Thanks for your advice.   I went to the instruction page to learn how to reset my Nest E.  I don't see the reset 'All settings' on my thermostat.

Hi @KeeF

Thanks for following up, and I apologize for the delay.

I noticed you mentioned not having an "All settings" option. Would you mind sharing a photo of your thermostat's reset options menu?

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,

Jenniffer

I don't see any 'reset' options.  The following options can be set individually: Fan schedule, Eco Temperatures, Safety temperaures, Temperature units, wifi conection, Lock.

I don't have permission to uploard photos.

Hi @KeeF,

Thanks for letting me know what options you see. Here are the steps that might help, but it depends on your Nest thermostat model:

Please keep me posted.

Hi Jenniffert, Thanks for your reply.  I 'googled' how to reset Nest Thermostat E (first generation, and lo and behold I landed on this page

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEBRPTn-Z7w.

I followed the instruction and was able to get to 'Reset all' to reset the unit.  What I had done up to now was to try to reset using the Nest App, on my phone or from my PC.  I now understand that resetting the thermostat must be done from the physical unit, which in hind sight makes sense.

I now have to wait for the next filter reminder to confirm that the frequency is 1000h - I reached the end but almost forgot what the problem was!

Thanks again for your advice.
