Nest gen 2 causing short cycling air conditioner only at night

Two separate times a/c tech guys checked everything and found no cause why our a/c goes into short cycle only at night 9pm to 10pm. A/C runs fine then around 9pm it stop for 2 or 3 mins the starts for 2 or 3 mins...it does this 4 or 5 times. Then it works fine all night. I called FPL and they said our On Demand program never decreased our power. I factory reset the Nest and turned all options off. Still, almost every night the a/c short cycles. Any help please?

Hi @TuShudas,

Thank you for posting in the community. I'm sorry to hear that your AC is short cycling at night. I'm here to assist you!

I also appreciate all the steps already performed. It seems like you have a Nest Learning thermostat (2nd generation); can you confirm this? To better investigate the inconvenience, I'd like to gather some additional details:

  • What type of HVAC system do you have (heat pump, conventional system, etc.)?
  • When was the last maintenance check for your HVAC system?
  • Has there been any recent changes or upgrades to your HVAC system?
  • Does short cycling occur when only cooling is used?
  • Is this the first time you're using cooling this year? If so, did heating work without issues during the winter?
  • Would you be able to share a photo of your wiring installation?

In the meantime, I suggest the following:

  • Check the air filter. Your HVAC system requires good airflow to operate properly. A clogged air filter can restrict airflow over the cooling coils, causing them to freeze and shut down the system.
  • Ensure the wires are fully inserted into the terminal and the connector buttons are securely pushed down. This guarantees proper wire connections. I also recommend cleaning the wires with a paper towel, as dust can sometimes prevent the base from recognizing the wires. You can check out this article for more information: Troubleshoot strange heating or cooling behavior. Important: Before touching any wires, turn off the power to your HVAC system at the breaker box.
  • In case you have the Nest Learning thermostat, check the power readings by going to SettingsTechnical Info > Power and provide me with the VOC, VIN, and IIN values.

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,

Jenniffer
