Nest heating when cooling

Gordon99

Hi - I moved into a house with a Nest mirror white thermostat. All the wiring was done and I believe everything worked ok for the previous owner. I then did a factory reset (probably a mistake...) and paired it with the app.

Now I don't think I have things setup correctly. It heats when it should cool, and cools when it heats and it is generally very erratic.

My system is an electric heat pump that provides both heating and cooling through forced air. That is the only system.

I attach photos of the wiring and the heat pump unit. I have Y, C, W, G, R, OB* [Actually I can't see how to upload photos]

Hi Gordon99,

Thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry for the delay. For my better understanding, could you please share a photo on how your Nest Thermostat is wired and on how it was set up in the Google Home app? To send a photo, please click this link then scroll down to your response and hit reply. You can check for the camera icon or click the three horizontal dots to expand the toolbar. From there, you'll be able to reply and share a photo.

Best,

Jenelyn

Hey Gordon99,

Thanks for the follow up information. Please try to change your Nest Thermostat heat pump orientation from O to B.

Please give these steps a whirl:

  1. Remove your thermostat in the Google Home app.
  2. Factory Reset your thermostat.
    1. Go to your thermostat Settings then look for Factory Reset.
    2. Once it restarts it must show "Continue setup in the Google Home app".
  3. Add your thermostat in the Google Home app and follow the prompt there.
  4. During setup it will ask you about the wires you have. Ensure to select B instead of O for the heat pump.

Let me know how it goes.

Regards,

Jenelyn

Thankyou for this reply. I followed all the steps. I've tried the heating cycle and it is blowing cold.

See attached for the wiring setup with B instead of O.

Hi Gordon99,

Thanks for the follow-up. A few questions: are there any set lockout or breakpoint temperatures? Is the outside temperature below the lockout or breakpoint temperature? Also, is the outside temperature below 45°F (7°C)?

I'll look forward to your response.

Regards,

Zoe
