Nest learning tstat orientation setting flipped wrong by itself

We got a new heat pump last Winter with a Nest learning thermostat. It heated in the winter and has cooled in the Summer up until this evening when it just started heating unexpectedly. I tried restarts, which did no good, until I found the help article saying the orientation setting was wrong. I flipped that from B to O and now it's working right again. My question is how would it have suddenly gotten the wrong setting this evening? A cosmic ray flipping a bit in memory?  Are Nest devices prone to random settings changes like this?  Is this likely to happen again?

@R12816 ,

 By default the nest software always assumes the Heat Pump is a O model since 80% of systems are.  The only way that is it was an O and got manually switched to B mode; a manual configuration change was made.  If you are dying to know, attaché the display to a PC using a USB cable, open the drive folder then inspect the system log file and log for the configuration change event.

Only thing comes to mind if when configuring the heat pump system reversing valve o/b wire there a third option that states I don’t know so you can configure later maybe that’s was chosen at the time and needed to be co figured properly at this point. An update is always recommended to keep software up to date but glitches do happen with today electronics as long as it doesn’t happen frequently I think your ok good luck

Thanks for commenting. I did do a software update afterwards so fingers crossed.

That's an I nteresting idea to check the log - I'll think that one over.  It seemed unlikely my wife got out of bed and switched the orientation setting - she's not inclined to go deep into menus like that, but just now I told her what you said and she admitted she "punched a lot of buttons" unsuccessfully trying to revise the schedule. I've gotta say the user interface on the Nest is baffling even to an IT professional like myself.

I find it much easier using the app interface on the stat is difficult cause of round shape.
