Nest switching primary sensor after manually setting it

DWin1024

Background:

I have a Nest Thermostat and three sensors (office, bedroom, basement).  During the week, my midday sensor is the office, but during the weekends, I set manually set it to the basement, since that's where my TV and PC are. I've noticed that throughout the day, the app will switch the sensor used for comfort sensing back to the office, and not during the start or end of the Midday setting (ie, 1100 or 1600). This has happened several times in one period, once having had to be done 4 times during the Midday period.

Preconditions:

  • At least two sensors
  • Schedule set in Manage Sensors menu such that Sensor A is the primary comfort sensor during the period this script is executed.
  • Verify Sensor A is selected for comfort sensing.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Open the Nest App.
  2. Select the Thermostat to which the sensors in the preconditions are linked.
  3. In the Temperature Sensors section of the Thermostat screen, select Sensor B.
  4. In the "Use this sensor for comfort sensing?" modal, tap "OK".
  5. Verify Sensor B is selected for comfort sensing.
  6. Wait until the HVAC system is running.
  7. Check the Thermostat screen and verify Sensor B is selected.

Expected Result: Sensor B is selected.

Actual Result: Sensor A is selected.

Workaround: Open the Nest App and manually reselect Sensor B as the primary comfort sensor.

Potential Theory: Eco Settings. If the temperature in the room Sensor A is in reaches the threshold of the user's Eco settings, the system will activate to bring the Sensor A room to the Eco temperature and override the primary comfort sensor.   Noted the system was not running when one of my rooms was 4 degrees below the eco temperature.

Hello, I also have this issue.  I have a schedule set where my gen 3 nest will switch between my 3 sensors.  When I manually change which sensor to use, I constantly find that the system has switched back to the previous sensor within minutes of me changing it.  This happens even if there is not an automated change in the schedule happening.

This is a constant problem for me as well. I really wish they would fix this because it's incredibly frustrating.

I am going to move my entire Nest set up to Ecobee because of this idiotic issue. There are a TON of other problems, but Google sucks at caring about products. Everything they buy turns to crap. I have wasted so much money on their ecosystem and I am a total moron for it.

I have this same issue as well-- very frustrating.  Any response from mods / support?

No, not yet.  Its seems to help if you leave the nest app on the screen where you switch sensors and send the app to the background.  I have actually not noticed the issue on my end for a while so it may be transient...?

I constantly have this issue and it's extremely frustrating. I have one in my baby's room, which is obviously smaller and heats/cools quicker than the area with my main thermostat. After manually changing it to the sensor during naps or bedtime (because the nest schedule doesn't coincide with those times)  it ends up keeping the AC or heater on far longer than necessary. What's extra confusing is that it seems to not be consistent. Sometimes it will switch back to the main thermostat within a couple minutes and sometimes it will be far longer. This is insane and almost feels like it defeats the purpose of the sensor.

Hi Amber20,

Thanks for reaching out here in the Google Nest Community.

I'd like to jump in here and provide further assistance. Have you tried doing a restart on your Nest Thermostat? Try to set the sensor schedule from the Google Home app again.

Let us know how it goes by replying to this thread.

Ryan
