Nest thermostat error e298

Jbbbbbb
Community Member

Google Nest thermostat has been  showing  No Power with error code E298. My house is brand new. New wiring, new fuses, breaker. Everything is new. Using the thermostat fine for 10 months and all of the sudden it’s not getting power. Batteries are new. I changed them last month. I’ve had hvac guys come out and they’ve checked the breaker. The unit. The wiring. In the end they come back with everything is new and installed correctly so it should work. Yet here I am in this hot house because this thermostat works when it wants to.

I don’t know what else to do.
Any suggestions?
Before I throw this thermostat in the trash.

Hello Jbbbbbb,

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your inquiry.

To confirm, are you still receiving the same power report with E298 on your thermostat? It appears that it's not getting any power to the R terminal, but I'd be happy to take a look at this for you.

Could you give us a rundown of all the steps they've taken to isolate it? Please share with us a photo of your thermostat's wiring setup. Also, gather its power readings from your actual thermostat's Equipment settings or Technical Info settings.

I'll look forward to your response.

Best,
Mark

Hi Mark
I have the same problem with my nest thermostat (version 1.3-10)
E298 error code.
settings wiring info says “ undetected wires y-c-w-g-r”

I’ve checked all connections, replaced batteries, reset system. No luck.

Any other tips?

Eric

Hello Eric,

I appreciate you reaching out. Could you gather its power readings in the Power Info section under Technical Info? Also, going over these steps might help:

  1. Turn off the power from your HVAC system at the breaker box before touching the wire.
  2. Remove the common wire and leave it disconnected.
  3. Ensure that all the other wires are properly connected and the tabs are pushed down.
  4. Take out the thermostat batteries for at least 3 minutes before plugging them back in.
  5. Turn on the HVAC system's power.
  6. Proceed with adding it to the Google Home app.

Let me know how it goes.

Regards,

Mark

Hi Mark. Problem solved.
Turns out there was another switch in my basement that controlled the furnace power. I feel dumb for not realizing this earlier! Thanks for your quick response.

Hi Eric,

Awesome! I'm glad to hear you sorted it out. If anything comes up, you know where to find us. Feel free to create a new thread for any inquiries or concerns.

Hey there,

I don't want to be a nudge, but I'd like to check if you were able to get your thermostat working. Feel free to reach back if you still need help.

Thanks,

Mark

Sorry. I just saw these comments. I was not able to get it fixed. I ended up going with a different thermostat and haven’t had an issue since then.
