Nest thermostat gen 4 heats continuously at night even after reaching set temperature

I had a Nest thermostat gen 4 installed professionally three weeks ago. I had a Honeywell before this that ran as expected but I heard good things about the Nest. The Nest thermostat runs constantly for hours even after it reaches its set temperature. It has ran for as long as 14 1/2 hours straight.  I have a heat pump and it has been extremely cold lately. But I’ve never recall a system running this long even when it has been cold. The professionals have returned twice to confirm that the HVAC unit is functioning properly and it is. Could this be an issue with the settings or the thermostat itself?

I should add that it’s an all electric unit with a two stage heat pump.

Hi AMD2025,

Thanks for reaching out here in the community! I'm sorry to hear that your Nest Learning Thermostat 4th Gen. runs constantly for hours, even after reaching the set temperature for heat. I understand how concerning this is, especially since it was running for as long as 14.5 hours straight. I'd be happy to help with your concerns!

I also appreciate you contacting a professional to check your system twice and confirm that the HVAC unit is working as it should. To continue investigating, I'd like to ask the following:

  • Have you noticed that the system continues running even when the display isn't actively requesting heat?
  • Have you tried removing the display to stop running the system?
  • Would you mind sharing a picture of your current installation on the Nest thermostat?

Since you've mentioned that you have a heat pump system, it seems like the inconvenience is related to the reverse valve activation being likely set to seasonal instead of cyclical. For guided instructions, you can check out this article: Troubleshoot when heating and cooling won't turn off. If the heat pump doesn't work correctly after a few minutes, perform a diagnostic test on the thermostat. For instructions, refer to this article: Troubleshoot heat pump issues.

Let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Jenniffer

Hi AMD2025,

Thanks for following up!

I appreciate the pictures and information you've provided. It seems the heat pump is set to 'seasonal' instead of 'cyclical' for reverse valve activation in the Google Home app. To confirm, have you tried changing this setting using the instructions in the previous article and the steps outlined above?

In addition, if the system keeps continuously running, please try removing the thermostat's display from the base to see if it turns off.

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,

Jenniffer
