Nest thermostat install error

Trying to reinstall my Nest Smart Learning Thermostat and I can't add it to Google Home.  I get the following error when I try to scan the QR code : Error! Unable to start device pairing.  Configuration not available.  
Then  I tried to add it by skipping the QR code.  I enter the 6 character code on the back of the unit and then it say to pick the last 4 characters of the serial number, but nothing shows up.

Another person posted same and said once installing through Google Home it worked.  I am using Google Home to install and get same error.

Nest Learning Thermostat is setup using the Nest app, not the Home app. 

Try these steps:

  1. Factory reset the thermostat to start again.
  2. If you haven’t already, download the Nest app on a phone or tablet.
  3. On the Nest app home screen, tap the Settings cog.
  4. Tap Add product. The app will switch to a camera view to scan the thermostat’s QR code.
  5. On the thermostat, press it to open the quick view menu and tap the Settings cog.
  6. Turn the ring to select Nest app and press to open it.
  7. Select QR code. Your thermostat will show you a unique QR code to scan with the app. If it doesn't, tap Continue without scanning in the app and select Get entry key on your thermostat instead.
  8. Follow the remaining steps in the Nest app.

Once setup, the thermostat should appear in the Home app automatically if you want to see it there as well.
