Nest thermostate E or the new $130 nest thermostat?

I want to replace my ancient thermostate but am confused about which wah to go. This is a rental unit and I don't wanna risk anything with the new nest thermostate $130 as it seems to support fewer, heating and cooling brands as per Google product description. I can get the thermostate E off of eBay for $100. Not sure if that's a good idea.

I wanna pair it with a sensor in one of the rooms.

What would you recommend if I'm just starting off as a newbie?

Nest E should be fine. They are not calling it end of life, just stating that it will no longer be sold retail, only through pro installers.

The new Nest Thermostat does not support temperature sensors.  If you want that, Nest E or Nest Learning are compatible. Otherwise I would recommend the "Nest Thermostat".

Nest E and "Nest Thermostat" are not learning. It's a bit of a user preference. If you want the thermostat to learn your schedule get the learning. Otherwise if you would prefer to set the schedule and have ultimate control consider one of the others.

To check compatibility you can post a picture of the wiring for your current thermostat. Take off the face and send a picture of the wires.  Or, you can use the Compatibility Checker to verify which models will work. 

Verify compatibility before you purchase!
